A Little Bit About Me...

I have done assistant teaching for my professors at Concord University. I helped set up laboratory equipment, answered college freshmans' questions and provided reasons for why certain biological processes occurred in Biology 102. I only did it for two hours per week, but I learned how to cooperate with college students and provide my insight of biology.
I had no exact teaching method. However, I was able to answer simple questions and allowed the students to work on their problems by discovering some of the ideas themselves.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is a skill that requires flexibility. As a college student, I have tried many different studying techniques and have succeeded in finding one suitable for my style. Teaching requires different styles and techniques until one is successful. I have observed that the "fun facts" taught by professors are what are most remember able. I am more than happy to try different teaching skills until one is suitable. I work well with communicating the subjects truly enjoy when a student learns. I have used tutors as an outlet for help in the past and I hope to be able to assist in obtaining an enhanced education.
As an infectious disease researcher, I have applied skills obtained since high school. My chemistry and biology skills were necessary to make bases, induce parasite inoculations, and process my data by ELISAs, DNA Extractions, Chromatography, Crystallography, and PCRs. ... read more

As a training manager, I often taught classes to large groups of individuals on subjects such as statistics, Microsoft Office programs, and teamwork, problem solving and quality concepts. Further, as an engineer, I did a lot of one-on-one teaching of job instructions and job changes. I further informally taught other engineers how to perform different tasks in Word and Excel.
Although I am an engineer by education, I have often found myself in a teaching role of all groups of people. I have often been complimented for my tremendous patience and ability to work with others to teach them some new information or concept. I believe in "teaching and doing" where the person is shown something and then they have to do it themselves to help reinforce the concept I'm trying to teach them.

More About This Tutor...

During my undergrad I was taught how to tutor students at the Tutoring Lab where I worked. Teaching students how to think critically is the key to success in any subject area. I found that asking students questions in a systematic way helps build a habit that allows them to approach any situation and come out successfully. I firmly believe in the saying "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime”. The goal in education is to teach students how to think for themselves.
My source of income all throughout college has been through tutoring either at the college level or at the elementary and high school level. I am currently working on my Master's in Adolescence Education degree which I should complete in December 2008. I am student teaching as well as tutoring at a local community center in Buffalo. Tutoring provides a great opportunity for one on one learning while using different teaching strategies. During that time, I can find out student strengths and weaknesses and tailor lessons based on this. I feel that a one on one environment allows a student to feel more comfortable in asking questions and expressing what he or she is having difficulties with. This can be challenging, sometimes, in the classroom setting.
I have a very diverse educational and work-place resume. This includes both undergraduate and graduate courses in the chemical and biological sciences, as well as education courses. My work experience also includes teaching at the high school level and extensive laboratory work in both the chemical and life sciences. I have a very strong passion for learning and teaching various topics within Biology, such as studying genetics, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, basic chemistry and basic math. I obtained a B.S. in Biology, cum laude at Allegheny College and will have the M.A. in Biochemistry from SUNY at Buffalo on 06/01/11. Because I have this strong passion I like to share it in hopes whoever I can teach can also appreciate it. In college, I was a reading tutor for kids from K-5 grades. As it was primarily for reading. Also within college, I found myself helping my friends understand the material.

I found a lot of satisfaction in tutoring in college and felt that I was an effective teacher. My students did well in courses that they had been struggling to pass. I use a step-by-step approach starting with what the student knows and connect to everyday life experiences. This approach works particularly well in subjects like physics or chemistry. While a good test score is the goal, I may teach fundamentals so the student understands the subject. This facilitates learning and memorization.
I graduated cum laude from D'Youville College with a BS degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. At D’Youville in 2001-2003 I tutored advanced sciences. The most complex course was Gross Anatomy in which I worked with students on both coursework and laboratory dissection. I also tutored physics and biological chemistry, my area of particular interest. I have approximately four ye ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a Masters and a Ph. D. in Chemistry which have enabled me to gain a deep understanding of chemistry. One of my passions is to pass on this knowledge to others. Most of my adult life, I have been involved in teaching chemistry. During my graduate training I taught chemistry for pre-med, pre-pharm, nursing, engineering and Chemistry majors and I was awarded the best graduate teacher of the year. I have also trained and mentored high school students, undergraduate and graduate students for research. I am very good at facilitating the learning of basic chemistry concepts even to students with a very poor or non-existent chemistry background.
My teaching style is the product of my personal experience as a student, teacher and parent. I am very dynamic and engaging in communicating with my students. I present the material in a conversation format rather than a speech and in ... read more
