I am a recent graduate with a Bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry followed by a Master's degree in plant pathology and have a passion for biology, math, and statistics. I have had lifelong leadership experience working with children ages 9 through 18, first as a camp counselor in high school and later as a tutor in biology, chemistry, basic math, and algebra. Several years into a research oriented academic career I began to miss teaching opportunities and have since sought a career change that will allow me to teach others.

I believe learning is about confidence. I have seen numerous students doing poorly in courses because they were convinced that they were not capable of learning the subject matter. Small successes help to build confidence in order to move on to the subsequent challenges. I believe in starting with the basics, and making sure that the students truly grasps the subject matter before moving to more difficult concepts. Often, it takes several different approaches before a student is able to understand the concept. A Little Bit About Me...

I have learned as a father of a home schooler that children learn in different ways. Some subjects hold more interest and are easier to learn. When students need to learn subjects that they do not find so interesting, creative ways must be used to make the class interesting. I especially enjoy finding and putting into practice those ways that will help a child to learn such as a rewards system, learning by touching and doing, and other things that will make the class interesting. In working with students one needs to have the ability to connect with that student at their level of understanding. This can be different for every student, and the tutor needs to adjust to the student. A tutor has to be able to do this or the student will not be any better off. It is my firm belief that I need to find a way to connect with each student, and find a way to help them understand what they need to learn.
