I am currently an undergraduate student studying communications. I have held four collegiate journalism internships, two of which were federal internships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In the past year, I served as assistant managing editor of my collegiate newspaper, The Oracle; served as assistant editor of the collegiate yearbook, The Eagle; and I served as a teaching assistant for the freshman introduction to journalism course at TN Tech University. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy seeing children learn new things. I know that every child learns differently. It is important to get to know the children that you are teaching and figure out what teaching technique fits there needs. I feel like I do an excellent job of portraying what I am trying to teach.
I have always loved children. Children are precious and all have very unique learning techniques. When I was a senior at Maryville High School, I taught Spanish to first graders. My partner and I were in charge of making lesson plans and fulfilling these plans for each class. I really enjoyed seeing the children get excited about learning.

My teaching style is very relaxed, though I also encourage students to stay focused and on-task. I believe in creating a positive atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions. When I teach or tutor in writing, I make it my goal to give students a solid structure for composing assignments that they can use to write any paper. When I teach reading, I make it my goal to find something in the text to engage the students, since if they are not interested, they will not read or comprehend. While completing my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at University of Idaho, I was often called upon to tutor people within the building where I lived during college. I also was employed by the University to grade papers and offer assistance to underclassmen in the Chemical Engineering department. At the University of Tennessee every student is expected to fulfill certain core curriculum requirements in any degree program. As an AP student in high school, I tested out of U.S. History and freshman English/Composition. I tested out of the first year of Spanish via UT's foreign language placement exams as well. With 18 "free" credits under my belt from day one, I was able to pursue my love for writing in the journalism program. I have earned a BS in communications giving me pratical hands-on editing and writing skills, be it creative, technical, or persuasive. In working with students one needs to have the ability to connect with that student at their level of understanding. This can be different for every student, and the tutor needs to adjust to the student. A tutor has to be able to do this or the student will not be any better off. It is my firm belief that I need to find a way to connect with each student, and find a way to help them understand what they need to learn. Very often in a school setting it is not only the subject matter that can give students a tough time, but a lot of times it is that the student either freezes on tests and quizzes or may not have good test taking skills, and sometimes this needs to be learned as well as a particular subject.
