I have earned a bachelors degree in Accounting and Business Management, along with a minor in Economics. I have worked for Northwest Savings Bank for the past 3 years, in many different areas. In my position, I help produce a quarterly report that is given to the department heads and shows the overall financial position of the bank. I also help lenders determine the financial situation of a potential borrower. While in college, I began tutoring 3-4 fellow students in Accounting.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an Honor roll student, a student on the Dean's list I was lucky to have graduated early. I taught six graders through opelia. I have also tutored a master's Student through her Statistics. Currently tutoring a student via online on her Senior Algebra for her Liberal Arts degree. I will hold a BA degree come december of 2010. Where I then plan to student teach and obtain a teaching certification.
I use all the main teaching tools. Both hands on and visually for those students who need different tools. I love to interact with children and adults helping them through their classes to better their future. I also enjoy having a hand in their future success. I have participated in Biomedical research both at Allegheny College (neurodegeneration in Drosophila melanogaster) as well as at the University of Pittsburgh (aggregation kinetics of the huntingtin protein). Furthermore, I volunteered at Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Crawford County as a Big Brother. The single most important thing about being a teacher or mentor is to be respectful, socially aware, and sensitive. Okay, that's three things, but they kind of go together. The second most important thing about being a mentor is to create understanding about the underlying principle of whatever it is he or she is learning about. Once you understand the underlying principle, the "how to" stuff becomes a *lot* easier to understand and remember. On the other hand, a person who's trying to learn the "how to" stuff without understanding the underlying principles is likely to forget key things, to be tripped up when an unexpected question arises, and to get into other trouble.

It is important to differentiate and identify the way that each child needs to be taught and engaged in the lesson. Lessons must be concrete and meaningful to a child.
