A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher or tutor it is very important to realize that everybody learns differently. Because of this you have to strive to find the way your student learns and utilize creative ways to make sure the student understands what you are teaching to them. In my experience I have used pictures, words, books, varying explanations, and multiple examples to teach.
My teaching experience actually extends back to high school where not only did I tutor fellow students in math and chemistry but I also taught swim lessons as my part time job. More recently I tutored students in the chemistry study center at the University of Washington. Furthermore, anyone who attends a University knows that being a successful active learner involves studying in groups where you teach others and others teach you.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an Honors Graduate of Washington State University, Vancouver, I pursued my English degree with an emphasis on Educational Methods instruction. This enabled me to learn real-world educational fundamentals in building and presenting teaching materials. As a life-long writer, I have acquired extensive grammatical skills. I have also tutored such subjects as Cooking, Computer Support, and fundamentals in drawing.
It almost goes without saying I love teaching. Few things warm the heart of a teacher than when a student has that "Ah-Ha!" moment as understanding dawns on him or her. A Little Bit About Me...

I started teaching English-Language Arts & U.S. History in central California, where I taught 8th graders for two years. Then I moved to South Korea, where I taught ESL for one year. After that amazing experience, I moved to South Lake Tahoe and taught English to 7th & 8th graders. While teaching, I also tutored after-school programs for kids that ranged from 2nd grade to high school. I have tutored in the subjects of reading, writing, life science, elem. and middle school math, and Spanish. Currently, I am tutoring two sets of kids in elementary subjects, with an emphasis on reading comprehension, writing essays, building vocabulary, and working on math skills. I am also teaching the students Spanish.

I received a BA in General Business from WSU, and was honored as a Cum Laude graduate. The courses were varied and included a wide array of math application, from supply and demand curves to interest rate calculations. My classmates gave me the nickname "Webster" because I was frequently asked to edit their papers and to tutor them in several different subjects. I love working with teenagers, and watching their faces change when they really GET a concept for the first time!
I believe students will rise to the level of expectations set for them. I am a bit of a comedian, and I use humor to allay frustration in learning situations. I believe in setting goals and charting a specific path for reaching them, while being flexible enough to alter the path along the way. Praise and positive reinforcement are powerful tools when teaching challenging material, and I use them frequently.
