A Little Bit About Me...

Studying for my MA, I held a TA and found that I had a talent for connecting with students. Although I pursued a business career, specializing in electronic payments, I tutored Math on a part-time basis because I found it rewarding especially when students who told me they "hated math" liked doing math with me and subsequently scored well on their tests. In the last 3 years I had 2 students that achieved perfect 800s on their math.
Showing substitution techniques when the student has to deal with abstract letters and symbols has been very effective. Also, stressing the importance of practice tests as well as the skill of time management is important. I like to gauge where the student is then go from there. If a student is having a problem, I try to see where there might be a gap in the backround knowledge, then fill it in, or if there is a problem in their processing of the information, I try to correct it. I do this fairly quickly. I'm typically able to tell just from a student's eyes as they look at a problem or how quickly they approach it, if they're having a problem. If I've worked with them for a while, I'm frequently able to know exactly what that problem is without them even saying it. I try to break the problem down into smaller parts, so it's more understandable to the student. Then we put it back together to see how those parts relate to the problem as a whole. My personal teaching philosophy is that there is no teaching without learning. Most classroom studies are at least partly removed from their intended application, for reasons of assuring comprehensive competency and because of the educational structure, i.e. attending school comes in advance of and separately from applying one’s knowledge.
