My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I use a multisensory approach espoused by the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction. Sight, sound, and neurological pathways to develop reading skills are utilized.

I have been a special needs teacher (k-8 moderate disabilities) for seven years, and an Orton-Gillingham instructor for eight years. Prior to my certifications I worked as a volunteer in Boston, Weymouth, and Quincy schools. I earned a Bachelor's in Literature and history in 1993, and am confident about my ability to work with all types of students in all areas of academics. I am a teacher in a substantially separate classroom for children with emotional disabilities. I also work with autistic children each summer in a social skills program. My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : As a dyslexic student myself, I have intimate knowledge of the possible difficulties with learning a new language.

During the last two years of my undergraduate career I worked as an Arabic and Economics tutor in the Academic Resource Center at Tufts University. With respect to Arabic, I worked with Beginner and Intermediate level students - extensively using Al-Kitaab. Being dyslexic, I have an intimate knowledge of the difficulties that dyslexic students face when learning a new language, especially with an abjad like Arabic. I also have considerable "teaching" experience due to my time working as a personal trainer.
As a student, I understand the importance of a good teacher. I always try and help the student find and correct their own mistakes, rather than merely giving them the corrections. In my first teaching position, I worked with emotionally disturbed and learning disabled students at the elementary level in the South Bronx. This included providing individual, small group and whole class instruction to students with learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and multiple disabilities. In my second and third year teaching, I worked at The Guild for the Blind on West 65th Street in New York City. It was a not-for-profit, non-sectarian agency that served persons of all ages who were visually impaired and multidisabled to achieve lives of dignity.
