A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching and working with children has been a love of mine for quite some time now. I feel all student's have the ability to learn but at a pace and level that is comfortable to them. My teaching style reflects my experience working with developmentally delayed students such as those on the Autism Spectrum. I provide a technique which is based on visual learning because I feel when material is drawn out or color coded, children will better grasp it and hold on to it longer. I recently graduated cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with two Bachelors of Science in Marine Geology and Maritime Law. I teach sailing and environmental education in the summers. This means very little however as I aspire, one day, to become a lighthouse keeper. Sadly, few can find such a position these days. I believe the key to good teaching is understanding the subject from the student's perspective. As a teacher, it is easy to take for granted certain assumptions and prior knowledge that a student may lack. Each student brings a unique approach and starting point to the learning experience. The teacher's job is to find that starting point and lead the student from there to a place of deeper understanding and knowledge.
