I try to take a hands-on approach to teaching when possible. I find it helpful to use varied and often unusual objects and materials when teaching a lesson; it tends to make the material more memorable. However I am not above using the standard pencil/paper/textbook approach when needed.
I consider myself to be a "beginner" teacher as I have recently graduated college and received my license. I have spent roughly 500 hours in the field as a result of college course requirements, and I have successfully completed a 12 week internship (student teaching) experience. I have had the opportunity to work in many different subject areas and classroom settings with students of various backgrounds, ages, and learning styles.

During my undergraduate studies at OSU I was trained by Americorps to tutor elementary students in reading and math. I worked for two years in the Columbus Public School System helping students that were behind their grade level in those subject areas. In my current high school position I teach a Career Based Intervention class and I assist students with their English, Science, Math and History lessons. Over the course of pursing my own education, bachelors and masters, I have acquired skills in grammer and punctuation due to the accuracy that was required for my journalism assignments and research papers.

I believe a supportive environment is critical for an excellent learning experience. First, I work to set up an environment of mutual respect, a place where the student knows I respect him or her and the student respects me. To accomplish this task, I actively engage with the student by showing an interest in the student's life. Essentially, I get to know the student. I then aim to clarify the subject matter the student finds challenging. If they still find a concept confusing, I approach the topic in an alternate manner. I do not give up on the student or the topic; I believe every student can understand a challenging concept by having a teacher explain it to them in a way the student finds comprehensible.
