My comments on tutoring Study Skills : Effective study skill methods differ according to individual learning style. It is essential to discern at the very minimum, what kind of learner a student is and where they fall in Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. I have usually insisted in helping people who have struggled in English and Math. I would do my best to explain the material until the student would have a solid understanding of the material. I have helped so many international students in English. As for math, I would insist on helping friends and anyone who is wishing to need help.
For math, I would explain the mechanics and techniques of how to get the answer. I want to make sure the student understands fully so I would also be asking the student questions just to ensure he or she knows the material well.
