My comments on tutoring Grammar : When I was in high school, English grammar was one of my best topics

I have tutored adults for free when they have needed a good eye to evaluate their work. Many adults can not spell and have trouble building a basic sentence. I am good at proofreading and helping the thoughts to flow better. I ask a lot of questions in order to help the student understand the thought process.
I prefer the style of patience and hands on. No computers, no spell check. the only way to learn is to do it yourself.

In 2000 I volunteered in the local high school's journalism class because of my passion for writing. The following year I was offered a position as yearbook adviser, and I further developed my skills with high school students. I have always been successful at teaching children to understand and believe that they can learn anything from hitting a baseball to doing algebra. Each child learns differently, as I have learned from my own children. Starting slowly and building on the fundamentals will open the child's eyes and give them the confidence to succeed. Children will learn if the teacher is patient and allows the child to see themselves as successful on their own. It is very important to build their self image and show them there is nothing that can't accomplish on their own. Personally, I am very patient, creative and encouraging.
Since graduating from college, I have been instructing professionals and employees in safety behavior and safety management processes. I have learned extensive grammatical skills in the military, during my assignment as an inspector on the Inspector General (IG) team. ... read more

My liberal arts educations granted me opportunities to learn and excel in many arenas such as writing, math, science, and the social sciences. I learned the art of effective communication, writing extensive essays and reports, as well as giving many speeches to audiences of various sizes. I have always had a passion for literacy and working with children. After graduating summa cum laude with a B.A. in English, I began working at an educational publishing company as an editor to help create textbooks for students. In 2008 I returned to school to get my M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction for Children's Literature, which was a mixture of literature and education (theory, psychology, curriculum) classes. The last 3 years I have worked as a volunteer with the Everybody Wins! literacy program and have volunteered weekly with high school students at my church. My tutoring strength is obviously reading and English language arts (grammar, composition), as my education, work experience, and tutoring experience are all in that area.
I've always loved interacting and working with children (through nannying, volunteering, and tutoring) but after finishing my master's degree I b ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The core principle I hold to as an educator is that to be a great teacher I must also be a great student. A willingness to expand one’s knowledge and points of view by interaction with colleagues, students and the professional world which ones teaches about is the best way to insure that students respect you and the information that you give them. If students are taught by a malleable mind, then their minds, too, will be equally flexible. By understanding that all students possess multiple intelligences, and that those intelligences vary from student to student, teachers and tutors should guide instruction towards both the intelligences a student naturally possesses and those that need development. Another successful tool in motivating students is to make sure they know you are there for them beyond your time together and that you take an interest in their entire education.

I like working one-on-one with students, helping them to identify what they already know about a subject or topic and then logically building that up, step-by-step, into what they need to know. Finding a way to explain a concept in terms each individual can understand is the challenge. When students have difficulty in a class, it is often because the textbook doesn't speak to them and the teacher doesn't have time to explain it individually to each and every student. Additionally, many students simply need extra time for guided practice of a concept, time to ask questions and double check what they are doing, before they are comfortable doing it on their own in a classroom or test setting.
The majority of my teaching and tutoring experience has been in English and Math. During college, I worked in the on-campus tutoring center for 4 years, focusing primarily on Math. After gra ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching with individuals of all ages. I believe that every person should learn something new everyday and to succeed in doing this all that is needed is a common link. My patience and determination show to my students that I am there to help them. Coupling this with a view at the big picture helps a teacher better understand which ways a student learns. Since all students do not learn in the same manner it is pertinent to establish a game plan in the first meeting and help them work through any difficulties that they may learning the subject manner. Once your teaching style is on the same page as their learning style, everything should work out in the end. Not only are you a tutor but you should also be a role model.

More About This Tutor...

I am currently a teaching assistant for the Simpson College English Department. I selected the books for the semester, drafted the curriculum, and I instruct classes. I also hold advisory office hours. I teach poetry, fiction and nonfiction. In addition to these things, I am a poet and fiction writer with a high level of experience and craft, and can assist students in expressing themselves creatively.
My approach for each class is to focus on the text and do exercises that give students the opportunity to work with the text first-hand. I focus on troublesome areas and I spend many hours planning each class. I prefer to let students come up with their own decisions, and craft their responses into the key ideas of the lesson. I believe that flexibility is key, and this strategy makes the students feel comfortable with discussing and thinking on their own terms.
