Very patient, friendly, and effective

I have seven years of upper level education experience with a wide variety of subjects. Four of those years I was involved in teaching and tutoring other college students. I also have worked with younger students, mostly with biology, history and research writing. I have done research in various fields of biology, specifically aquatic biology.
I find I learn the most when I can relate a subject or theme to something current or more familiar to me. Finding something a student is interested in and trying to break down a complicated matter into simple, easy to remember parts when possible that they can relate to in an easy manner. I find this very effective with students who may have ADHD or just some trouble focusing on occasion.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and helping others, especially children. I believe that there are "no stupid questions" and that all children can learn. I think that one of my best qualities is "patience" with others. I am a firm believer in teaching by example. I like to share my personal experiences of working hard and overcoming obstacles. I truly beleive that every child can do anything that they "put their mind to". I love to instill in children my enthusiasm for constantly learning new things.
I am a Certified Public Accountant with over 30 years of accounting and finance experience. Although I have no formal teaching degree, I feel that I would be an excellent tutor. First, I have successfully trained many employees over the years. Second, my two sons, ages 21 and 19 graduated numbers 2 and 1 in their high school classes, respectively. Now, both are "straight A" students at the University o ... read more

I have held a strong passion for history since I was an undergrad at Radford University. As a graduate student at Hollins University I was able to study a broad spectrum of academic fields with an intense focus on history. I am currently employed at Virginia Western Community College as an adjunct professor of both World and American History. I am also currently applying to Virginia Tech for a PHD in the Study of Science and Technology on Society program. As both a student and teacher I have developed extensive writing and analytical skills. I feel I would be of a great benefit to younger students in preparing them for the college environment.
I teach both face-to-face and online courses. In my face-to-face courses I usually start with a class discussion on the previous topic. I do this with a series of loaded questions meant to grab the students attention where I then work my way ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I thoroughly enjoy teaching students at various ages and stages of development. I consider myself to be very creative, and I try to give the students as much hands-on experience as possible. I am constantly seeking feedback from the student in terms of how well I am presenting the subject matter, so my methods of teaching will vary. I am always open to new ideas. Failure is not a word in my teaching vocabulary. I will always find a way to reach and teach my student in such a way that learning and application are maximized.
