Taught ESL for more than twenty-five years across Canada and internationally. Lived and taught in Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Costa Rica and United States. I was a teacher-trainer for Oxford Seminars, where I taught teacher-candidates how to teach ESL for international classrooms. I was responsible for instructing and then certifying teacher-candidates. I believe the biggest key to learning is finding a way for students to relate to the information. Getting to know the student and relating thier interests to the material at hand is key to making a connection. I also believe it is critical to remain positive and supportive with students. At some point every student becomes frustrated by material that is challenging to them. By being able to keep students in a positive state of mind and by keeping the material fresh and fun, students will be more willing and able to continue the learning process.

As a student at the University of Chicago, I have tutored at the local Ray Elementary school through the Neighborhood Schools program. There, I tutored two fourth grade ESL students, an Italian boy and a Korean girl, primarily in math and reading. I have also tutored at the STRIVE tutoring center, helping a 7th grader and 8th grader with math and reading.
