I believe strongly in adapting to the students style of learning. There is no "one size fits all" in learning. I think it is important to go beyond teaching the facts by exploring the bigger picture. Development of critical thinking skills should go hand in hand with teaching the test materials.
I have a degree in English Literature and graduated with a 3.66 GPA in 2012. I have written hundreds of college level essay and research papers. I have a Master's Degree in Creative Writing and I am currently attending Southern New Hampshire University to obtain a Master's Degree in Education. I work as an educator and specialize in Language Arts.

ELL, Reading and Writing, Standardized tests ALL ages

I have recently acquired a Master of Education degree in Education-a lifelong dream. I have taught in both private and public schools in grades PreK-6. I have tutored many students along the way-including summer school for struggling readers and writers. My most recent assignment was a permanent substitute position in the first grade. I am currently tutoring in ELL AND ALL ACADEMIC SUBJECTS. I have passed all the MTEL exams and have helped fellow colleagues with these exams. I also hold License to teach Special Needs.
I am a fan of Howard Gardner- I believe each student has his/her own learning style. Knowing these learning styles can help both teacher and student accomplish academic success. I also believe in a gradual release of responsibility on the student's part. Teaching vocabulary before the actual lesson can help the student understand more completely.

A teacher can positively impact each child with thoughtful dedication, perseverance, creativity and hard work. My goal is to bring consistency, diligence, and warmth to my job in the hope that I can encourage such traits in the students as well. As a creative writing major at school, i was an avid member of our newspaper, serving as copy editor. When i graduated college i continued my summer job as a technical writer at an engineering company. My last position was also an assistant technical writer. Both positions required knowledge of AP style, extreme detail to grammar and an ability to write different styles. After school in between finding career positions, i briefly tutored and substitued as a paraprofessional in the nearby school district. I was an self employed as a tutor and primarily saw elementary aged children who were immigrants. We specifically concentrated on spelling, reading and mathematics.
I am a firm believer of repetition. I have many books on grammar, linguistics, writing styles and nonfiction/fiction how to. I accompany any lesson with many resources. My goal is to instill the importance of good sente ... read more

As a teacher, I bring passion for both creativity-based and logic-based subjects. I don't subscribe to the right-brain/left-brain paradigm. I believe students can be strong in both mathematics and writing, and it is my desire to help students realize this, because so few people do. My basic tutoring practice is to let the student do most of the talking. I believe this keeps the student engaged in the subject and demonstrates whether or not he or she really understands. I believe that language facilitates thought, that being able to explain something in words helps us to understand concepts better. I often have the student teach me back, meaning that I have the student explain a concept in his or her own words. I believe this helps the student solidify his or her understanding and to identify and fill in any gaps in comprehension.

As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.
I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.

More About This Tutor...

It's important for me to get to know my students as individuals. Children need to know that their teachers do not view them as passive students, but as real human beings who have opinions and feelings that must be shared. By getting to know my student's interests in and outside of school, I hope to better understand their goals and capabilities. I also think it's important to make learning fun! A sense of humor is always a great way to keep students focused and on task.
Since completing my bachelor's degree in English in the spring of 2007, I have tutored elementary, middle, and high school level students ELA during the past 2008 school year. I was also employed as an English tutor in Lowell, Massachusetts where I tutored 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
