My name is Abel Araya and I love to write stories.

My teaching style is a bit unorthodox. It's easy to lecture through to the class, but it doesn't really engage the student to want to learn. When I was in college, a lot of my professors had styles that were much more intimate and personal with the students. I ask a lot of questions (open discussions) for students who I believe to be engaged with the classroom. In other words, I let the student speak their mind on the material, and with the help of my educational insight, their ability to process it and follow through on it--that's what I hope to achieve in terms of my teaching style.
The summary of my experience has a lot to do with the concept of writing, both creatively and contextually. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing in 2013, and I've also had experience working with RuffaloCody, which is a company that partners with non-profit organization; it is designed h ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I do not have a definitive teaching style. When teaching someone, I usually try to adapt to their learning style, and if they do not have a strategy that works, I help them develop a good learning style and get comfortable with it. I like to think I make learning difficult things more fun and approachable.
I absolutely love performing and any aspect of theatre. I love learning and growing in my theatre knowledge and experiences. I have been performing in some way my whole world and love to share my passion with others. I also love English and Shakespeare; obviously these both go hand in hand with theatre!

Special Education Teacher

As a current student studying special education and literacy instruction, I have had the opportunity to learn the newest and most recently researched "best practices" in teaching. I am currently certified in Special Education. My teaching experience has been significantly enhanced by my experience as a mother of a ten year old with special needs. I believe in creating a positive, professional atmosphere in a tutoring setting. I assess students based on specific needs expressed (by the student, parent, and/or teachers) and plan my instruction based on the data provided in assessment. I use researched methods in my instruction with a focus on direct instruction, modeling, guided practice, and continuous informal assessment. I have high expectations for my students as I believe that my job is to facilitate learning to each student's potential. I have worked with students of all ... read more

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have been teaching poetry for 5 years within the school setting. Some of my students have won awards with their poetry writing.

I have been working with the school system for several years. I am currently teaching a fourth/fifth grade split. I am very experienced in working with children who are at risk, special needs, and add/adhd. I have a proven track record of student growth in core subjects of 1 year 3 months. I enjoy tutoring and teaching and I work a great deal with parents in order to keep the educational goals on the same page for their child. I have experience in both the world of sociology and psychology. I am able to adapt to behavioral issues that plague some children. I work hard to really get to know the student and help them calm themselves if they should have test anxiety etc. Every child is unique and all children have to be taught in the way in which they can truly learn. I always teach with different styles due to my experience working in China, Ohio, and other areas.

I am very dynamic personable adult who loves to laugh, but also knows how to get down to business and get work done. I think it is very important to not only feed information to your student, but also to create a relationship them. This helps the student to feel comfortable so they can ask questions, even those they may feel to be stupid. I have been able to teach non-technical elderly adults computers and teens that had no interest in religion by creating a relaxed atmosphere and attempting to make the subjects interesting, relevant and fun. I believe one of the keys of effective teaching is making things as interactive as possible, trying to get students to teach themselves as we proactively guide them through subjects.
I have been teaching for 25 years. Most of my teaching was in religious settings working with teens, but I have also tutored younger children with school studies ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In high school, I served as a tutor for elementary school students for the state program Ohio Reads. At the University of Pittsburgh, I earned a BA in English Writing with minors in Chemistry and Studio Art. I have extensive experience in technical and laboratory writing, critical analysis, critiques and creative writing from related college coursework. I frequently aided fellow classmates and students in improving their writing independently. I have extensive experience working with the internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. I have completed four years of Spanish coursework and can tutor at the elementary and middle school levels.
I believe a supportive environment is critical for an excellent learning experience. First, I work to set up an environment of mutual respect, a place where the student knows I respect him or her and the student respects me. To ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy working with students, especially at the college level, who have not experienced a great deal of success in a particular subject and aspire to do better. I believe that the key to any kind of scientific or mathematical learning is repetition. It is first important to get to the heart of the concept, and see what is holding someone back from understanding something. After that, it is all about repetition, once a student has seen many examples I have found that it will click all of a sudden.
I graduated from Ohio State in June 2011 with a BS in molecular genetics. I graduated with honors and with a GPA of 3.657. I have taken the MCAT with a score of 33 (10-BS, 12-PS, 11-V). I have never worked professionally as a tutor but I have tutored friends extensively throughout my college experience. I have an extensive background in biology, physics, chemistry, and the h ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am a very energetic and interactive teacher, moving around the classroom, challenging students with questions, providing many examples and anecdotes to illustrate teaching points. I always try to teach inductively--leading the student to discover the answer on their own, and I encourage them to express their own original thoughts. I use a multisensory approach to teaching, using audio-visual resources and the internet whenever possible. I really enjoy leading students to see things from "out of the box" perspectives, to find relationships between seemingly unrelated things, and to synthesize novel insights by doing so. The most important tenet of my teaching style is respect for the individuality and potential of each student.
I taught 3 years in college--Freshman English, Grammar Basics, Composition, Speech, Literature, Business Communications. Taught over 15 years (English, Pr ... read more
