I received my Bachelor's degree in 1989 and worked as an assistant engineer in Binghamton NY until I started my masters program at SUNY Cortland. I have held Physics, Earth science, Chemistry and Biology appointments in the years that followed in a variety of School districts throughout the state. I have spent five years tutoring and 17 teaching, including 12 years of summer school. The best thing about teaching and tutoring science is that it easily transfers to all of the other disciplines. All children are capable of learning. I believe that it is a developmental process. I also believe it is a scaffolding process in which we must build upon the skills that have been taught previously. If a student missed a skill, it is difficult to build upon it. Sometimes we must go back and re-teach that skill. Unfortunately that doesn't happen enough in our education system because there is not enough time or teachers for that to happen. But, if we can find where the student missed or misunderstood a skill and help them to achieve that skill, all the other skills we build upon then will come at a much easier rate for the student!
