I believe every child learns differently, and that the presentation of information must vary on a constant basis. In order to keep attention of learners, new techniques and methods must be constatnly implemented to actively teach students. I feel that students learn best when they trust their instructor, and feel secure in there environment. After college graduation in 2006, I subsitute taught for a year in Pennsylvania for a year before moving to Maryland to persue a permanent teaching career. I taught technology education in grades 6-8 before moving to West Virginia to start a family. My degree is in the field of technology education, but I also hold an additional certification in middle school math. I feel confident in my abilities to tutor math of all ages, as well as physics classes.

Math is learned by doing, but in attempting to do something you haven't really learned yet you're probably going to get stuck. A math tutor's job is to get you unstuck (or in some cases get you started). Sometimes that's just pointing out mistakes, and sometimes there's a weak spot in your background that needs cleared up before you can go any further. It's not easy, but I think anyone can learn math, even advanced math, but you have to start with a solid foundation. My teaching approach for other subjects is somewhat different, but still mostly consists of alternating between explaining/demonstrating and assisted practice. I have earned two bachelor degrees from West Virginia University Institute of Technology, a BS in Mathematics and a BS in Computer Science. I find my utmost happiness in turning on the common "light-bulb" on top of my students' heads. Their understanding of the subject is my key objective. When I first came to teaching in 1997, my teaching philosophy was based on 4 essential principles. First, I try to care for every student as if they were my sons and daughters at some times. Second,I want to provide a model of professional behavior for my students. Third, I try to bring that excitement into the classroom. Fourth, I frequently revise my presentations from year to year, by bringing in new ideas from the literature and from my own research, as well as new problems and examples. As an undergraduate I tutored in the help center of WVSU. My last semester I had to choose between Biology and Chemistry, due to a schedule conflict, and I chose Chemistry. After graduating, I worked toward my PhD at Montana State University for two years. I worked my way through teaching labs, and completed 19 credit hours, before I had to move home for family reasons. I also worked in the help center during the day and held weekly study groups in the evenings. I believe that there are no boring subjects, only boring teachers. I teach so others may learn to find interest. My heart races when I help someone learn. We are always learning, and I will always be a student. I am able to relate to people on that level, regardless of subject level. No one is born knowing this stuff, we learn through life. To teach is to learn. It must be nice to teach to teach. This is my goal.
