A Little Bit About Me...

I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this is getting students to understand that it is okay to ask and answer questions. Most students I have encountered are used to simply looking at the teacher but never really interacting with them. If I ask a question and nobody gets it, I rephrase it, reteach the section that led up to the question and generally try to understand why the question is not being answered. Aside from some initial amount of memorization, students need to learn how to think through concepts and ideas, and the best way to do that, regardless of subject, is ask them things.

I have never taught a subject, physics, mathematics or philosophy, at a level that was beyond the abilities of any student who really wanted to master the material, and I don't think I'd be interested at teaching at that level. Many students are not able to master these subjects in school, but quite often it is not due to a lack of desire on their part, but instead a lack of sufficient preparation due most often to poor prior instruction. As a child of a university professor and preschool director, education has always been a focal point of my life. I began teaching and tutoring during college, both in religious and secular settings. I have taught music, Hebrew and Judaic Studies to 3rd, 6th, and 9th graders. I also spent several months tutoring high school students in math, science, English and history.
I strongly believe that the key to success in teaching is flexibility. Each and every student has a different style of learning and the successful teacher must be able to adapt to those styles.
