I believe the best way for students to learn is by doing and discovering the material hands on as oppose to being lectured to. I like to instruct demonstrate the learning material to my students intially, but after that i prefer to have my students try the material themselves so they can see and understand what aspects of the material they dont understand. That helps me pinpoint what i need to focus on as far as helping them with a particular area of miscomprehension. I strongly believe in learning by doing instead of learning by seeing. I am fully aware that everyone learns in their own way so i am flexible in my teaching methods.
I developed my passion for teaching others from a a pre-college program I was in called Upward Bound. I learned study skills, time management and other skills that helped me excel in college. After college graduation,i obtained a tutoring position with t ... read more

During my research-based M.Sc. study in Microbiology, I TA'ed three undergraduate courses (General Biology & Introduction to Microbiology). Over the years, I have become more aware of myself so that I can learn more efficiently. I scored well on my ACT (33) and my GRE (the grad school equivalent of the SAT - 690 for verbal, 740 for quantitative), and was able to attend well-regarded schools for my scientific training. I have many people to thank for my writing and analytical abilities, especially M. Nunley from Middlebury College.
I believe a good teacher will be able to convey the information in way best-suited to the student. A teacher can be extremely knowledgable, but the student must be enabled to learn through motivation and having the material accessible/understandable. I want to make sure the student is on the same page as me, and understands concepts/approaches to learning ... read more

Free and unconstrained autobiographical writing is one of the best ways to coax a student insecure about his or her writing skills into putting into words intense experiences from their own life. I tell my students to just tell me in their own words what they are trying to say. When they speak aloud, the words flow, and then I say, "There is your opening sentence right there. Quick! Write it down." At other times, I ask them to pretend that they are really someone else, an actor in a television show, for example, and I have them imagine that the character, not they themselves, are speaking. This releases the student to let go of inhibitions and let the film roll "for the character" and then they stop focusing on themselves.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that the most effective teacher is one who guides the students to finding the correct answers. Instead of simply giving out answers, a teacher should encourage students and help them along the process for them to find out the solutions on their own. By overseeing this learning process and helping along the way, the teacher ensures that the student will learn that they are capable of learning the material and further increase their confidence in academics.
I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. I have worked with youth in educational settings for 10 years. My experience is in outside of school time, so my methods are unique. I am a fan of hands on learning and strive to make every educational experience unique for the intended audience. I am certified in Advanced Youth Development Principles through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee where I have been employed for the past two years. Through this certification I have gained knowledge of developmental stages of youth and how to apply that to educational techniques and communication strategies. I love working with youth. I like to keep a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere around learning because I believe that the more fun it is, the better it will “stick”.

My teaching style spans two decades, and many hundreds of students. In that time, I have learned that individual students have individual learning styles. Therefore, my teaching style would be dependent upon the student and his or her needs and current state of mind. When possible, I favor a mastery method of teaching, attempting to focus on the essential elements of learning, and then building knowledge. Other situations may require a different approach. But regardless of the approach, the tutoring will be a success only through scheduled and careful collaboration with the student and parent, and I will work to build and maintain that communication.
I have taught and served as a principal at parochial schools for 15 years, teaching every subject in every level in grades 4-8, and English in grades 9-12. In addition, I have served as an adult educator for 6 years. My particular area ... read more
