Students come with various background and motivation levels and ways of learning. A tutor needs to be able to discover within the student the best way for that student to learn. I believe students should be pressed not to memorize facts but to use critical thinking skills, tying things together and seeing relations so a multitude of similar problems can be solved. There are many ways science can be taught. Over the years, I have found that tutoring works best by breaking the material down into mini lessons, give the students guided practice in solving problems (we solve it together), and then independent practice where the student demonstrates mastery of the concept.
