I have been teaching in various forms for over ten years. I was a teaching assistant for four semesters in graduate school. I mentored and tutored people during my time as a Naval officer. I worked for Kaplan Inc for about a year, teaching almost all of their tests, including SAT, ACT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE, and GMAT. I taught mathematics and statistics at Parkland College for three years. Throughout my tutoring experience, I noticed oftentimes, students wouldn’t be able completely grasp the concepts the first time when I explained to them. To resolve this problem, I have learned that it is helpful to explain the process of solving the same problem from a different perspective or using a different method. Also, sometimes after I explain a problem to the student, to make sure that the student really understands the concept, I ask the student to explain the same problem back to me or to another student who is also confused about the same problem. Since I have worked with many different children and people I know that everyone is different. I am confident that I can figure out how someone learns best by trying different ways of teaching until we find the right way. I am very laid back but extremely motivated and I want to push people. While attending Danville Area Community College from 2003 to 2005, I tutored middle school and high school students through a program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This included individual and group tutoring sessions in all subjects. I mostly tutored in mathematics as this is my specialty. After transferring to Eastern Illinois University, I began my pursuit of a teaching certificate in secondary education with my concentration in mathematics.
