I love teaching and working with children of all ages. I believe in encouraging children to discover what they are to learn instead of rote learning for most things, and I also believe in establishing automaticity for some tasks, such as math facts and geometry theorems. I believe that all children are capable of learning with the right approach. It is important to persist in teaching a concept from different angles until the child "gets it." A good educator can make a world of difference to a child. Through my years of teaching I have worked with a variety of learners with different needs. I have worked with children with Autism, ADHD, gifted children, and children with strong emotional needs. I have had to approach each individual differently and focus more on the way they learn, and less on the way I teach. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children, young adults, and adults. Teaching others in any way is beneficial for them and in the long run for me. The biggest thing for me when teaching younger kids is patience. I never expect them to know something just because I do; they pick up on frustration which only makes them frustrated themselves. I believe that kids have the capacity to learn anything they please, and I do my best to transfer this belief to them. I never place myself on a pedestal with them, rather I make an effort to ensure that we see eye to eye. I respect them, and they offer me the same in return. For older students, I make sure that they don’t feel barred in by my (or the professors) opinion; rather I encourage them to formulate their own theories, so long as they can back them up. I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system. So, I decided to move to a very rural location on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. There I spent the next four years as a special education teacher. I taught students with Emotional Disorders, and resoruce level classes in English and math with students with specific learning disabilities. As a non-traditional student I was in my 30's, a single parent (three daughters), and working full time as an industrial sales rep. In 2005 I graduated with honors from New Mexico Tech with BS degrees in Physics/Astrophysics and Basic Sciences. Upon graduation I took a position as an instructor, grades 5-12, at a science camp in California for 2 semesters. For the past 2 1/2 years I have been employed as an Astronomer/Observer with M.I.T.'s Lincoln labs LINEAR program, searching for near Earth asteroids.
