A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching in various forms for over ten years. I was a teaching assistant for four semesters in graduate school. I mentored and tutored people during my time as a Naval officer. I worked for Kaplan Inc for about a year, teaching almost all of their tests, including SAT, ACT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE, and GMAT. I taught mathematics and statistics at Parkland College for three years. I am currently employed as a full-time instructor at a government laboratory...but I'd like to teach more, in the late afternoons, evenings, and weekends!

I love teaching and working with children and adults alike. Everyone can learn; it is up to the teachers to find out how their students learn best. I was 14 years old when my younger brother was born, so I had the wonderful opportunity to learn firsthand that teaching requires a great deal of patience, knowledge, and flexibility. The education that I have received in Biology and Chemistry enabled me to develop excellent skills not only in many of the life sciences and physics but also math. I've always been really good with the sciences and ever since I can remember would help my classmates. I have volunteered to tutor biology and chemistry in college for almost 3 years. I've helped plenty of people before exams in those disciplines and I feel comfortable tutoring.
I would like to share my experience with the people I teach on how to use many of the short cuts in both math and physics for a better understanding of the topics covered. Also I encourage students to do as many practice problems as possible; I believe with enough practice, everyone can become experts even at the difficult topics.

I truly enjoy teaching basic physics and mathematics and have been told I am pretty good at it. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to explain a concept in different ways, as of course, people don’t all learn the same way. There’s nothing more rewarding than finding the right explanation and watching the light bulb come on when a student grasps a concept with which they were struggling. Although I am pretty good at classroom presentation, my favorite interaction is one-on-one or in small groups, when teaching can occur that is tailored to an individual.
