In my experience I have found that it is always better to not only provide the didactic, but with it there must also be an ability for the student to relate personally. As it relates to methods of instruction, I have always utilized the three step method of: 1) See one, 2) Do one, and 3) Teach one. This is also akin to crawl, walk, and run method. There must always be a teacher student means of communication that is functional and effective.

Because each student, young or old, responds to different learning stimuli (graphical or verbal) at diffrent rates, I always try to get to know my student first. I then try to tailor my tutoring to how they respond best and retain what they've learned. I believe in repetition and using examples that a student can relate to, and then testing the student's understanding of the subject matter.

A Little Bit About Me...

In a one-on-one situation, I prefer dialogue. Assuming the student does the assigned work before the session, I find that a informal, relaxed conversation on the subject matter at hand encourages the student to further explore the addressed topic. If I am familiar with the student's extra-curricular interests, I attempt to relate the subject matter to such interests. I find that questioning the student in a conversational manner produces the best results, as opposed to the more stringent (i.e. boring) task of fill-in-the-blank worksheets. For writing assignments, I ask the student to write a paragraph which we then go over line-by-line so the student has immediate feedback on any errors.
