During the first meeting I explain to the student that it is not only my job, but theirs to help themselves succeed, and to understand what troubles they are having with their specific courses. I follow the student through their book carefully, and prepare myself for the individual tutoring lessons. This form of education has given me the best results for the students.

Are they a visual learner I draw pictures, maps, charts and video; if an audio learner tapes, lecture, youtube, video, etc,.. and if a kinesthetic learner then they need the hands on experience to develop the learning that is needed, so then standing back to guide the thought process without doing it for them.

I have been translating complicated ideas into a language/format that others can understand since kindergarten. I have always enjoyed the process. As a college student at Carnegie Mellon University, I started working at Sylvan Learning Center as a math tutor specializing in Algebra and Calculus. I also found quite a bit of success working with behavior problem students in middle school and higher math. Over the years, I have both returned to Sylvan periodically as well as did private tutoring when opportunities presented themselves. I love education and the process of learning. Access to education is critical for every person to be able to pursue their dreams as they see fit.

I feel that my academic knowledge as well as the practical experience I have gained over the years qualify me to help tutor students in English and math.
I am a strong believer in the Socratic style of teaching which, as you know, helps students themselves to think through issues and problems and discover the answer as we move along.
