The school of Education in North Carolina prepared me well. I am above all flexible. My license reads K-8 and I have taught Art K-6 for a year, Second Grade for two years in NC. Then in 2001 I taught Title One reading in TN for a year then Fourth grade for three more years. My family moved to Northern VA and I taught Fifth grade there for two years before moving back to TN for a year where I taught 8th grade Algebra, and 7th grade English. Since moving to Maine I have only had oppurtunity to work with alterative special Ed with grades 6, 7 and 8.
I have worked with students who were given up on years before, but once the met me, they evolved and became what so many said they never would become, educated.Vgotsky talked about the zone of proximal development and potential. As a journalist and teacher, I've always enjoyed getting the most out of the English language and passing that knowledge on to students of all ages. I base my teaching on the axiom that "writing is thinking," that the writing challenge brings out the best in us, and that we owe it to ourselves to take pride in our work, which means rigorous revision, self-editing and proofreading. My students learn the value of equating clarity with brevity, writing to include and not exclude, and following a writing process that emphasizes careful pre-writing, or brainstorming.
When I teach writing, I emphasize -- and ensure that the students practice -- rewriting. Not even professional writers get it right the first time.
