In my teaching experience, I preferred small or one-on-one settings, which enabled me to get to know the student so I knew how to address their specific needs, but also allowed the student to become more comfortable with asking questions. In situations where I had to teach one-on-one, I made sure to start off by finding out what the student already understood about the subject at hand, so I could build off of previous knowledge and understanding. I use their motivations to demonstrate the value of learning the subject in which he/she struggles. In 2005 I took a position as a Science/Math teacher in a remote Eskimo village in the Alaskan bush until 2010.
