My first session with the student is when I can determine whether their learning style is visual, audial, tactile, kinesthetic or a combination of these. I then write a prescription of study with the student that include several objectives and a timeline to achieve these goals. I work with the student to promote a sense of achievement and to build confidence for future learning.

Having obtained a Communications degree from college, I was quite driven to help students who faced challenges in the areas of reading/writing. Further, I had extensive experience in Title I and Reading Labs, even on the college campus where I studied. Later, I earned my Master's degree and did research to assist me in understanding the pervasive issue of a higher incidence of language difficulties faced by these students versus that realized in Math. During the past years, I have taught high school and college English courses to students who have been identified as needing assistance in Reading and writing. While my degree is in English and teaching certificate from the University of Kentucky, most of my career has been spent in the area of corporate training for a Fortune 100 company. I conducted classes for new employees and managers and used my writing skills to provide training and testing materials. For the past four years I have done substitute teaching for levels Kindergarten through twelfth grade. I have working with people of all ages since my teen years to help them excel in areas they once struggled. I currently do some subbing in local districts and help out area students in various content areas. I taught school for 12 years at the middle level, mostly in Math. I developed and implemented an AT-Risk program in the Milwaukee area. Then became a stay at home mom. I currently work at an area Insurance Company and help students when I can.
I try a variety of approaches to see what works with each student. If you have 25 students in a class, you can have 25 different learning styles. I believe a lot in hands-on and learning from others.
