I have worked with elementary, high school, and college-aged students, providing instruction in subjects ranging from English to biology. I am comfortable teaching a group, but I also have ample experience working one-on-one with students. I believe that course material should engage students. I do not believe that rote memorization is practical in most real-world situations, and I prefer to provide instruction in a manner that makes learning interesting and fun. This typically results in students who retain information long after a test is over.
I attended Thomas More College on an academic scholarship and graduated with honors in the spring of 2011 with a BA in Environmental Science. Presently, I am pursuing a Master of Biology degree at the University of Cincinnati, where I hold a University Graduate Scholarship as well as a Yates Scholarship. I love to learn, which is why I love teaching children. Every child learns differently, because of this, teaching is a learning process as well! I believe that students learn best through hands on activities that allow them to internalize the concepts they are struggling with. Whether it is using math manipulatives to understand multiplication and division or using letter tiles to understand consonant blends in reading, hands on activities are the best way to learn.
As an education major at Berea College, I volunteered my services as a tutor three nights a week in addition to my student teaching and education courses. I was also a Pre-Kindergarten teacher during the summer terms while I was in college. I am certified to teach all subjects grades K-5. I have my masters degree in Reading and Literacy Instruction. I currently teach Pre-Kindegarten in Lexington.

I love working with students of all ages. I believe that everyone can learn when they are given opportunities for success. Those opportunities most often give support to the student, but they also teach the student to take a responsibility for his or her own learning. I believe in teaching students to master concepts in such a way that they can also be successful unsupervised; thus, tutoring or additional instruction is an aid for success, not a crutch.
As an undergraduate, I spent three years in the education program. I clocked over 100 hours in public schools observing, mentoring, or otherwise working with children in elementary, middle, and high school. I also spent two years as a Writing Center Consultant where I worked with college students on their own writing. I was an ESL tutor for one semester where I worked with two small groups of Japanese speaking students on their Engl ... read more
