A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience tutoring individuals with ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, and those who simply do not understand the work. For the past 4 years I have tutored students in all subjects in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Also, I have a child who is ADHD with whom I assist while doing homework. Though I do not have a degree, I am very patient as well as knowledgeable. I can break things down to any level so that your student will understand it better and possibly even enjoy the subject more.
Once I have an understanding of what a student is capable of I like to push them to go past their "comfort zone" in learning. It helps them understand that what may look difficult, may not always be so and that they only way to find out is to learn it. Also, I do not teach study habits. Instead I like to see what a students current habits are and work on expanding those habits so that the child does not get f ... read more

Turning your weakness into your strength

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

My comments on tutoring Science : My major is in Cognitive Psychology with a double minor in Biology and Applied Anthropology. I have taken a broad range of courses and feel competent in my abilities to tutor most elementary and middle grades fields of science.

My approach is multimodal as all students are different. The one consistent element is that of an active learning environment. Passive memorization and repetitive tasks are not part of my repertoire as both have usually been unsuccessfully attempted by those seeking tutoring. I request a lot of participation from the student. Development of critical thinking is also a fundamental part of the tutoring environment. This skill alone will help students through all academic courses (and life in general). Although my expectations are high, we begin by building a firm foundation of study skills and habits which work to make these expectations attainable. My background knowledge in human cognition has given me invaluable insight into how we encode, retain and recall information.
As a returning adult college student, I have both classroom experience and life experience. My academic bac ... read more

Hands on- creative-student centered learning!

I think that a lot of learning happens by students being actively engaged in what they are learning. I try to get/make hands on activities for students to learn.
I am a certified teacher. I have taught first grade and I am currently teaching second grade. I have 2 years experience as a tutor for students in elementary school and also high school. I work hard to help students do the best they can. I look for ideas outside the box to help students learn. Along with hands on activities, I also incorporate catchy ways to remember certain objectives. I make learning fun by creating a great relationship with the student which allows them to learn and want to learn.

More About This Tutor...

I have experience in engineering which includes a solid understanding of math, calculus, statistics as well as physics. I have applied and practiced these skills in various business industries over my 12 year working career. I also have experience teaching at the under graduate level for the Measurement and Instrumentation course in the engineering program at Iowa State University.
My teaching style is to first teach the basic principles and then teach how they can be extended and used to solve problems. By helping students understand the fundamentals and problem solving techniques, they are able to think for themselves. This allows them to think more independently and solve a wider variety of problems without relying on memorization.

I have been a dance teacher in both a private SACS accredited school and public school for a total of 20 years. I have taught all ages, as I am certified K-12. In my tenure as an electives teacher, I have been required to teach content skills in both math and reading. Most recently, I was a lead teacher for a preschool where I prepared students to enter kindergarten. I have excellent written and verbal skills, which along with my passion for teaching combine to make me a great tutor! I have had great success working with ADD and ADHD students.
I strongly believe in differentiated learning. Each student, with the help of a qualified educator, should discover which learning style (or combination of styles) works best for them. They can then employ techniques to make learning and retention of information learned easier for them. I am a "hands on" teacher...research has p ... read more

Having been a babysitter and a nanny since 7th grade, I have been exposed to many different children and understand that not everyone learns the same way. The variety of ages, personality types, and ethnic backgrounds that the children have has given me an open mind in which I can assess a situation and determine how an individual can attain information the best way. I have helped with homework ranging from English to Algebra and strive to create the most impactful atmosphere I can. The most important aspects about teaching are patience and kind understanding. I am also the oldest of four and have grown up teaching my siblings since I was little. I fully support the critical thinking aspect about education and believe with support and knowledge passing information onto another is one of the best gifts you can give.
Although I have not had very much tutoring or teaching experience I ... read more
