Teaching with Passion!

I have four years of experience tutoring students K-12 in English, Science, Writing, Religion, Reading, Psychology, and beyond. In addition, I have two years of experience helping high school and college level students in test preparation and professional writing skills, in which I teach essential aspects of writing a professional style paper and teaching students the necessary strategies and skills to prepare them for anything from an English test to a Graduate Placement Exam.
I believe that every individual has gifts, talents, and learning styles unique to them, so I challenge and motivate my students to meet their highest potential as independent thinkers. I have found this to be the most effective method for students in learning the subject best, being engaged in sessions, and gaining the confidence to solve tough problems and tackle challenging assignments on their own. I have a deep passion for learning, and it's always my goal not only to help students learn skills but to find their inner motivation too. I currently work as a substitute teacher, and I appreciate the chance I have to see the best of what teachers and paraprofessionals are using in the classroom and how they help their students. I have much experience students of all ages with their homework and projects as a nanny, babysitter, and older sister of four. I was also a certified therapeutic riding instructor, so I taught individuals with disabilities to ride horses. I was a top student myself, and I have a B.A. in English with a minor in history. I attended graduate school for writing and editing. I currently work for an equestrian travel television show, writing and editing quality articles for the website.

Award-winning writer and editor ready to tutor you!

My experience as a newspaper editor helped me to develop a collaborative teaching style. I want to work with students to understand their questions and help them work through them and arrive at the conclusions on their own. I have a non-intimidating teaching style and want my students to walk away from the sessions not only understanding the answers to their questions, but also be able to apply that knowledge in future situations.
Three years of experience in writing and editing as a staff member at the Grand Valley Lanthorn, a student-run newspaper at GVSU. I began as an intern and held various writing and editing jobs throughout my tenure, ultimately departing as editor in chief. My writing has been recognized on the national and statewide level by the American Collegiate Press and the Michigan Press Association. I recently graduated with a B.A. in journalism.

A Little Bit About Me...

Dr. Segal taught us that traditional teaching methods are outmoded. Therefore I came to my own conclusion that as a teacher I would allow my students to confront me on their terms and make the learning experience as relaxed as possible. Students won't learn anything if A) the environment is unsuited to them and B) if you jump down their throat over every little thing. The important question to ask them is "why?" or "what do you think?" In regards to myself teaching is an avenue that I am considering and thus a bit of real tutoring would give me a taste of how I should go about teaching in the future.
To be honest I have no experience in teaching outside of the college setting. The two years marked denotes my two years in upper division English classes at SVSU where student critiquing was the norm. Beyond helping my friends with their papers I took several classes on teaching ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My pedagogical style adjusts itself according to the needs of the student. I am typically patient, and considerate, yet I can be firm if I need to be. No one person learns the same way, and my goal is to provide the best possible education, customized for a student's needs. I believe in a hands on approach, and my goal is to guide the student to his or her own discoveries, which I believe makes a stronger impression than simple memorization can offer. I believe strongly that education is the single most important gift that you can give yourself, and my constructive approach reflects this belief.
While earning my BA from Oakland University, I would often tutor my fellow students and help them refine their papers. In addition to the sharp grammar skills required by my major, the numerous papers that I wrote have given me a broad general knowledge base which expands beyond the pu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a creative teacher. I love to design my own lessons to engage students and compliment their learning styles. I have experience teaching traditional classrooms, but my passion is non-traditional education. I love working one-on-one with students or in small groups.
I graduated from Saginaw Valley State University with a degree in Secondary Education and am certified in the State of Michigan to teach 6-12th grade English and math. Along with completing student teaching, I have substitute taught in various districts as well as tutored homeschool students. I volunteer at my church as a Sunday School teacher, and during college I participated as a conversation partner in the English as a Second Language program.
