Medical Student who tutors in: MATH, ENGLISH and BIOLOGY

I tend to focus on an individuals weaknesses and use concrete examples to help clarify topics. I also feel it is best to understand the basics first and subsequently build upon that foundation.
I am currently in my 4th year of medical school and completed my undergraduate education at the University of California Berkeley where I received a bachelors in both Biology and Education. I tutored both math and english during my college years. Throughout my education I have received straight A's in math up to the calculus level and am most comfortable teaching elementary, pre-algebra, algebra I and II. My comments on tutoring Elementary Social Studies : Very strong in teaching this subject

I have a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a minor in History. I have 7 years experience as an Engineer. In High School I went to an international baccalaureate school and focused on math and science. I believe that tutoring is the key to successful learning by incorporating the following 5 rules to teaching: Assist A tutor's main job responsibility is to assist students academically in whichever subject(s) the students are seeking improvement. This may be difficult at first because not everyone learns the same way, so before a tutor can assist, he should get to know his students a little. Evaluate After tutoring for a while, some tutors will go back and evaluate students' progress in order to see where improvements can be made. The tutor may evaluate her teaching skills to make sure her students are receiving enough attention and assistance. Motivate A tutor should ... read more

Profile Banner? What's this for? I'm awesome? What else?

I'm fairly laid back. I try to get to know the student first and see how they do with their work on their own and of course helping them out when needed. Occasionally, I'll give my own tests to see how well their test taking skills are and how they do under pressure. Once I get an idea of which area is their weak point, I'll prioritize the subjects so that more time is focused on their weak area whether it be reading, math, writing, or even just test taking skills. I also do a lot of fun logic puzzles to get them thinking and also creative writing projects so that they have a way to express themselves. I think it is very important for children to have a chance to break away from the standardized tests and be allowed to think outside the box starting at a young age.

Learning is not optional. Remember...

I have been teaching and tutoring a diverse student population for almost 9 years. So far, it has been a mutually interesting experience for both parts, students and teacher. I started my teaching career through instructing languages, mainly French, my native language, for the one and a half year, and then I included different sorts of Math as well till the present. I have in possession a Bachelor's degree, two Master's degrees and an ongoing PhD. My main field stream is teaching methods and theories of languages, multiple subjects and special need instruction as well. During my teaching and tutoring experience, I have had the chance to explore different kinds of students learning backgrounds and helping them accordingly. I am a teacher and a tutor, yet, I have gone through quite an interestingly rich learning experience myself. I have helped students coming from wealthy and rich ... read more

My tutoring style is somewhat laid-back with serious undertones. I feel the best way to learn is to not have information force fed, but to allow the individual to glean knowledge and come to an understanding of the subject gradually. While I am serious about learning and education, I also consider my sense of humor my strongest personality trait. I believe being able to interject humor into learning is often times crucial to the learning experience, as long as it comes second to actual learning.
I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science with focus on the Microsoft languages (C++, C#, ASP, dotNEt, etc.) The requirements for this degree was heavy in math. I do, however, feel better qualified in verbal and writing skills. I also have a minor in Philosophy and Theology. This ties in with my High School and middle school upbringing, having attended a Catholic middle and High school as wel ... read more

My strongest area of expertise in teaching is reading. I have taught it for years. I have come to the conclusion through both personal experience, observation of other master teachers and through current educational research that it is most necessary to teach reading and math daily in a systematic manner while exposing the students to a learning rich environment(a classroom reading corner full of books is ideal for this). Research shows that a child needs 100 exposures, repetitions of for example the word “fox” to learn how to read it and make it their own.
I have worked with children in the public school system for thirty-four years as a classroom teacher, Title I augmented reading teacher and as a media specialist. I love teaching and working with children. I enjoy helping children grow to their full potential. All children can learn if given the right tools and experiences. There are many ways to teach children. All children are different and learn in different ways. It is important to find out how each child learns, and then teach him or her accordingly. I believe hand-on practice for math skills is very important and math requires a lot of practice. I always strive to help students become the best they can be.
I have been an elementary school teacher for 3 years. I have assisted 4th and 5th grade students in math and reading. As a philosopher, I have what amounts to an unusual ability to convey to a student a sense of the value and importance of the subject he or she is studying. This is key in motivating any student. As a teacher, I am a careful student of the psychology and abilities of my student. To teach effectively, one must determine precisely where a student is developmentally both in terms of personal psychological maturation and intellectual skill levels, then go from there. Another key to effective teaching is the ability of the teacher to break complexities down into simpler, digestible units, then show how the units may be logically and effectually brought back together.

As a recent cum laude college graduate of Mercer University with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry, I have an extensive background and understanding of math and chemistry. I have also gained extensive writing skills due to writing lab reports and research papers, in addition to essays written for general education classes. As a babysitter, elementary school tutor, and hospital volunteer growing up, I have come to love working with children. I find the opportunity to help students learn and succeed in school to be very rewarding. As a teacher I have many years of experience in various types of settings, I have worked in urban, rural settings, and with students of varing degrees of learning ablilities. I have enjoyed the challenges of working with all sorts of students and seeing them gain self-confidence and excell. I have worked in tutoring programs in and out of the public school system.
I do enjoy teaching and I have worked with all types of children. I think it is an asset to observe how children learn and to be able to tap into their level of interest. I believe children need to be encouragement, to be challenged, to experience success, and to develop an excitement about learning. Once a child has experienced a level of success and an excitement for learning the sky is the limit to what they can accomplish.

I tutored for Mission: Mentor while I attended Georgia State Universtity for 3 years. I was awarded Mentor of the Year in 2006 at Georgia State University. When I continued my education at Augusta State University, I volunteered as a mentor at the ASU Literacy Center helping children of all ages.
I love teaching children. For the younger children, I tend to be more hands on with projects and objects to help them learn. I also believe visual aids are very good. For middle school children learning math and English, I feel like giving them lots of practice problems and going over it together really seems to help. For students in high school it usually depends on the kid. By this age most of them have discovered if they are visual, kinetic, or auditory learners. Based on the type of learner they are , I like to adjust my teaching style.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a child of an educator I learned the importance of good education very early in my life. I earned my teaching degree and went on to teach elementary school for several years. I was the grade group chairman, math liason and served on the committee to improve test scores while keeping the children and their education my number one priority. I have homeschooled my children and taught in an academic co-op with other homeschooled children. During the last ten years I have tutored elementary children in all academic subjects required for success on their current grade level.
Teaching has been my passion for many years. I have taught swimming lessons since 1980 and found that I enjoyed working with children so much that decided to make it my career. As I approach my college graduation, I have realized how fortunate I am to have been given the opportunity to attend college. I understood the importance of understanding math in life early on and my Finance degree only validated that notion. Early this year, I began tutoring advanced math to middle school kids and found it to be a rejuvenating to see young minds eagerly waiting to be academically challenged.
During my course as a math tutor, I’ve found one on one tutoring to be most effective. Each child presented different needs and was receptive to different teaching methods, so I would meet with them individually. I believe each child is just as likely to succeed as the next one, and as a tutor, it is my job to encourage and instill confidence in them.
