Teaching is a reciprocal experience for the mentor and the mentee. I believe in fostering a learning environment for my students that is both participatory and relevant to a their individual learning style and interests. Working one-on-one with a child, adult, or in a small group is a privilege and affords the opportunity to do more than just teach; it is an important opportunity to help to empower someone to "learn how to learn." In my teaching, I believe that developing confidence, self-discipline, and appropriate learning tools is just as important as mastery of any particular subject. In any interaction with a student, I understand and value my role as a tutor, and I aim to inspire and to set a positive example.

I am a creative, patient teacher. I know that everyone learns differently, so I try to come up with many different ways to explain a concept. I love to see the sudden understanding in a student's eyes when they finally understand a difficult concept. This is what makes teaching an addictive and highly fulfilling activity for me.
During my undergraduate years, I often found myself tutoring fellow students. Eventually I got a job working for the math and science tutoring center on campus. I tutored students in my own classes and others, and I also helped teach a vertebrate anatomy lab. I am currently a Master's student in biology, and while biology is my field, I am also an accomplished writer. I feel comfortable helping students in a variety of fields, especially basic mathematics, science, and writing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I usually start the class with the basic introduction of the subject or course; its main objectives and what the students should expect to learn and be able to apply in actual situations after the semester. Then the lecture time follows where we explore the particular topics which have been assigned to them earlier in the week. Problem solving methodologies are then discussed to assist students in doing their own solutions to problems. Sample problems are then presented where the students are given the chance to provide solutions. Thereafter, I proceed to solve the problem in front of the class for them to copy in their notes. Topics for the next lecture series are then assigned at the end of the class period.

I tend to teach by leading participants on a somewhat self-inspired inquiry or pursuit. By providing sufficient material and probing questions, students ready, willing, and able to learn can take us - teacher and student - on surprisingly rewarding journeys. The "brass ring" is there for both.
I'm passionate about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. With my degree in geology and experiences in technology and computer arenas, I'm capable of guiding inquiry on such subjects. In addition to traditional teaching, mentoring, and volunteering from grade school computer labs to adult geology field trips, I've also coached teams such as Odyssey of the Mind (at all levels 3rd through 11th grade). My career has also taken me through technical writing, finance, and project management experiences from which many practical skills have emerged.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo I was interested in English education, especially in terms of helping students improving their reading and writing skills. I followed this interest by tutoring at the university writing lab, as well as doing frequent one-on-one tutor sessions with students in need. At the end of each quarter I conducted private, one-on-one counseling sessions with the goal of helping students pass Cal Poly's Graduation Writing Requirement. At Mills College, while taking a class on pedagogical theory, I became a teacher's assistant at Merrit College, where I regularly led group discussions.
I use a teaching paradigm that stresses the importance of student's needs and learning styles. Every student brings unique skills and perspectives to the classroom and tutor session, and because of this I have found that my teaching strategy changes per student and per ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Conversational. From what I learned in Taiwan little kids are not for me. This is the truth. Kids at about 14 or 15 and older are much preferred. I don't think I am animated enough for younger children...well, not a GROUP of younger children anyway. When it comes to one on one though, it is much different I am sure. I like to give ideas on how to sound out words, remember grammar/math tricks and things like that.
I double majored in Biology and English with a Bachelor of Science degree from a very well known, highly esteemed University in Wisconsin. I went to Taiwan for two months from March-May 2010 and helped teach in a "Bushiban" or cram school to kids aged 6-15. I am currently looking for a full-time job relating to my degree.
