Before I begin to teach I like to attempt to understand how much the student comprehends about the particular subject. I prefer to teach globally and with examples. I think it is important to identify what the student needs to work on and present it in a way the student can grasp the concept and enjoy learning. The student has to enjoy learning to succeed. I try to present material in such a way that the student will find it interesting and use different techniques to help them remember what they have learned. If he/she had trouble with this, I would give hints allowing them to find the correct answer. Although my BS degree is in Computer Science, I have taken (and passed!) courses in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering - which means I have learned a lot of advanced math. My work as a software developer required writing "white papers" to explain and describe our software as well as test documents that would allow a person unfamiliar with our software to sit down and formally test it.
