No pain, no gain. Learn, progress, and explore.

I am from South Korea and have been studying in America for 4 years. During 4 years, I was struggling to learn English and studying hard to follow my classes. As a result, I learned the efficient way of studying English(useful for people who are from other countries) and maintained A- grade during my high school. I taught Korean students who needed English help and American students who needed math help(especially for ACT math). I got 29 ACT overall score and 33 ACT math and 28 English ACT. Studying at St. Olaf College, I explored the joy of teaching. As a native Korean speaker, I taught American friends who are interested in Korean culture and Korean. During my freshman year at St.Olaf, I maintained A- grade and got a dean's list for the second semester. I enjoy teaching in general and understand the struggle of learning. Especially, math is a definitely challenging subject and somet ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During my undergraduate career, there were multiple influences that contributed to my passion for teaching. First, I tutored college students from Asia who were exchange students. This gave me the opportunity to apply what we learned in the classroom, and adapt to a culture that learns differently than Americans. Second, I tutored a high schooler in Spanish. I used this as a tool to see how a person can still learn when they are not interested in the subject. Third, I taught English last summer in Mexico. I was given a group of high school students, a book of lessons, and hardly any supplies. Resources were slim, but my creativity grew.
I develop most of my lesson plans using GLAD principles. I like to use multiple senses, student interaction and various resources to keep the student active. When teaching a language, it is important to know the basic grammar structure first, and t ... read more

During my sophomore year in high school I decided to begin tutoring ESL students. I found the ability to help others succeed very rewarding, and began tutoring fellow classmates in courses including but not limited to English, math, biology, and chemistry. These sometimes difficult subject always made sense to me and I enjoyed watching as the students I tutored were successful. I have in that time earned a BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Florida State University. With this degree I have had extensive exposure and to and learned many different areas in the math and science fields. While earning this degree I volunteered in an after school program tutoring under-priveledged children in the Tallahassee area. I believe in a teaching style that reflects a student's learning style. Whether they learn best by hearing, seeing, or doing it is important to cater to the student. My teaching style works around this philosphy and tends to be a combination of all 3 styles.
Although I have recently graduated with a degree in business, I am interested in pursuing a career involving people. My previous employment was a sales position that was very customer-oriented. I also have 3 years of experience helping children by teaching swimming lessons. Assisting my 15-year-old sister with her school work is also a regular activity.

More About This Tutor...

My experience tutoring Math and Science is extensive. I started formally tutoring Chemistry in 1996 as a chemistry tutor. Throughout my Bachelor's and Master's degrees I tutored students independently. This helped me develop a wider range of approaches with which to help different students learn. I am well versed in many different mathematical disciplines. I am familiar with everything from arithmetic to graduate level mathematics and statistics. I am also familiar with many areas in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the freshman level.
My teaching approach varies depending on the student. With youth, I am both patient and focused. I am also considerate and easy going. As the student gets older, I let them dictate what they would like to learn and the intensity they would like to learn it at. I respect students of all ages and I am always attentive to their needs.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from the University of Redlands, in Redlands, CA, with a BA in Liberal Studies and a minor in Communicative Disorders. I have teaching credentials for both Minnesota and California as an elementary educator. During my college years, I was employed as a tutor where I worked with grades K-12 in all subject matters. I have also been a reading and mathematics tutor for a non-profit tutoring center and was employed with the Redlands Unified School District as an American Reads/Phonetics tutor. My student-teaching was completed in a first grade class and a fourth/fifth grade combination class.
I hold the personal belief that, “All children are special and learn differently. Each possesses the right and the ability to learn. It is my responsibility to ensure that all children receive the knowledge and tools necessary to reach their full potential.” I think learning need ... read more

I attended the University of North Dakota for 4 years and in that time received a BA in Anthropology which has provided me the experience and knowledge of helping people in holistic ways. I now attend graduate school to obtain an MS in Applied Anthropology. Just about every semester I have written a 7-15 page research paper and have written several other essays, reports, and assignments in general. I have also done research for domestic violence organizations and helped teach college-level introduction courses.
Teaching is a wonderful experience! My teaching style is laid-back, I'd say. I like having conversations in order to determine how someone learns. I think people learn best when discussing the material and really think it out before they start creating something. Guiding a student down the path of their own learning style is important because they will need those skills in t ... read more

My primary experience lies with Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program. This program was established to promote and nurture minorities interested in pursuing a career in the sciences and mathematics. I was involved in the program as a fellow. This position required me to mentor a group of younger scholar students. The position required me organize events (such as tours of science industries and resume building session), establish program outline for the school year, lead mentoring sessions, and facilitate study sessions.
I believe a successful instructor is the most important part of teaching; one who is knowledgeable, wise, and be able to effectively communicate the knowledge to the students. I believe this can be achieved primarily by knowing the entirety of the subject taught and being able to connect with the students on an individual basis. The most ... read more

My passion for giving children the encouragement they need to succeed is paramount for me. I believe that because children are our future, it is a necessity that they have every resource to achieve their dreams. I am the oldest of six children and have a two year old myself, and that alone has put me in a position to be a leader, a good example, and a mentor. I can easily relate to people from diverse backgrounds, and believe that regardless of set-backs or frustrations, every child has the ability to succeed both in school and in life.
I'm currently a mentor/employee for a Museum, and am involved with science learning activities, exhibit planning and other activities/programs.
