Fun, caring, and supportive teacher looking to tutor

I am very hands on in the areas of math and science. I enjoy teaching children to think outside the box when learning. I teach students to use colors, pictures, mnemonic devices to help remember important steps, people, dates, etc.
I have been tutoring since I was in high school and have continued tutoring elementary students in the areas of math, reading, vocabulary, social studies, and science into my adulthood. I have a bachelors degree in Education from Arizona State University. I have worked in the school environment for the last year as a teaching assistant in a high risk special education classroom. I am currently earning my teaching certificate so that I can teach in the next year.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : Algebra I is the basis for all higher math. This is where the concepts begin to get really abstract and it is very important to be able to find ways to visualize what is happening. If one can create a picture of what is happening in one’s mind, one can then remember the concepts and apply them to the situations which will be used in geometry and onwards. One of the ways I help students with this is by having them use what I call a ‘trivial example’, which is an example of the rule which is so easy that I can’t get it wrong! This can help a student check the correct method even in a high-stress exam. There has to be a better way of learning than trying to remember lists of formulas… and I can almost always find it. One of my high school students used to be really scared of math… and he earned an F. This year, he is passing, and he just asked me for some extra problems so that he could practice a concept to be sure he had it clear for his next test. I don’t have to remind him of material from earlier in the year anymore, because he remembers it himself. I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

I have taught Special Education for over 20 years in a wide variety of settings. I have tutored about 100 students in a wide variety of subjects, using my deep knowledge and understanding of how we humans learn and retain information and skills. I am friendly and approachable, quickly establishing a positive rapport with my students that enables me to demand excellence with a willing response.
I pinpoint the specific skills that are challenging for my student and then use innovative and engaging methods to help them master those skills. I always aim to leave my students comfortable and confident in the subjects I teach them.

A Little Bit About Me...

Math was never an issue for me, I was always ahead of the curve in my math scores, and when I got the chance to relate that math ability to economics, it all made sense. Economics is second-nature to me. Economics puts calculus into real-world situations. Breezed through it in high school and first couple years of college, realized it would be an excellent thing for me to major in. Economics is all about logic, and being a logical person, economics always came easy. When you think logically, you are thinking economically. In economic problems, you always assume the agents in the problem will act in their best interest.

Algebra I is one of my top subjects!

I am very patient working with kids including coaching (soccer for the last 3 years) and tutoring activities. The math I have listed comes easy to me and I have been able to teach others and explain it in such a way to improve their understanding and skills. Grammar and similar English concepts are also a strength of mine, and I was an Editor for a Journal at my law school. My Note was published in our Journal the year I graduated, and in undergrad, my Honor's Thesis was published in a larger work by my supervising economics professor.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : if you are tired of feeling like someone is speaking a different language to you, call me. I can teach you math, in ways you have never heard off, that will all of a sudden make you see math, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and a lot of other courses in a whole new light.

In my years of education, I found that some of the methods used for teaching these subjects were inadequately explained, therefore causing students not to truly understand how to apply mathematics and science in school and their every day life. I have learned how to tutor in these subjects from raising my own children, all of whom found these subjects to be hard until I showed them how to avoid the pitfalls of our educations system. All of my kids were A students and are now in college, none of them now have a hard time understanding the subjects and are excelling in their own lives.
I am a hands on type of a tutor, I start from the basics and work my way up to their current subjects, so that they can build on a good foundation, understanding the basics is the most critical step to understanding the complexities of Algebra and above, and how the sciences start to get more complex ... read more

Arabic native speaker I read and write Arabic. No degree on teaching or any certificate, but I have been done many teaching work either with my little sister and teaching her Arabic or other people who seeks to learn Arabic. So I call my self that I'm familier with how the teaching works, how much you need to have information to give it and pass it to them and how much patience you need to be. Beside all of that, I love helping people!
