Years of Knowledge and Experience to Share!

My teaching style is casual - I am not stuffy or formal, and I try to get right to the heart of what is holding a student back, or what the difficulty is that he or she is having. I establish rapport and then dig into the meat and potatoes of the problems. This way, we tackle the problem together and a solution can be found.
I have lots and lots of experience with reading and writing to share! I have 30 + years of experience with composition - legal writing, high school and college composition, MLA and APA formatting, legal citations, and the elements of creative writing. I recently received an M.Ed. and Literacy Certificate from my alma mater, Regis University, and I am eager to share all of the knowledge and experience I have gained with your students. When I tutor students, I make sure they come away with better reading and writing skills and hopefully are more excited about ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My desires to make an impact on someone’s life have led me to develop a teaching style based on passion. I have become dedicated to making an impact on every student’s life. I strive to motivate the students to explore themselves and expand their mental boundaries. Inclusion is also a significant part of my classroom environment. I value inclusion because every student, regardless of ability, is capable of learning, and I cater to an environment that encourages and embraces diversity. I believe that every individual learns differently; I know that I would be doing a great disservice to my students if I taught the material only one way. My classroom is enriched with my passion and desire to teach.

More About This Tutor...

My philosophy of teaching is that a teacher should let students discover solutions in their own way. A teacher is someone who is there just to lead them in the right direction. It is rarely a good thing for a teacher to just provide an answer because often times this is of no help to the student. A teacher must read and understand where a student is coming from in order to ask the right questions and sometimes give answers so that the students can come to their own conclusions without being given too much information.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is catered to the student. However he/she learns best is the way I will strive to teach them. With no preference, however, I am a very visual educator, as that is how I best learn. I mainly teach with step by step examples, explaining each step's relevance along the way while relating concepts to real world application.
Throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies I have maintained an A average. I have been considered to be very intelligent, professional, and a great leader to my peers during my schooling as well. Although I have only tutored a couple of students during my education, they both did considerably better on their exams after my tutoring.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an Ivy League graduate, I have always been driven to excel at whatever I put my mind toward and hold formal education in high regard. Throughout my graduate studies at Columbia, I was part of the Harlem Tutorial Program where we tutored local elementary students once a week and I found this a very rewarding experience that I would like to continue. The quantitative skills in math and statistics that I developed in business school was in additional to the strong writing skills that I developed as a dual political science and philosophy major in undergraduate school. While I was in high school, I also participated in a tutoring program in a nearby community of foster children and remember enjoying this experience very much. As a professional, I have taught various levels of students through the Junior Achievement program here in Denver.

To effectively teach any subject I first take the time to clearly organize my thoughts on the subject, decide upon what objectives/information that I would like/need to convey to my students, and then prepare a complete lesson plan including clear goals and a concise agenda for day's topic, which will be shared with the students at the start of the lesson. During the next segment, I present and explain the chosen topic in enough detail to provide a foundation for the class to then be able to engage in a variety of interactive, skill mastery activites, designed to further clarify the subject in as many different ways as are necessary to meet the various learning styles and needs of all the students present.
I have been teaching in both classroomas well as one-on-one settings here in the US as well as Europe and South East Asia for over 20 years. My students have been of all abiliti ... read more

I think learning should be fun. If a student doesn't enjoy what she is doing, she won't likely attain mastery of the discipline. Moreover, I think students learn best by doing as opposed to being told what to do (i.e. practice as opposed to lecture and explanation). This means that I leave a lot of space for students to try things without fear of making mistakes. Evaluation (especially critical evaluation) is an important element in the later learning process, but initially the priorities should be placed upon fun, experimentation, praise, and lots and lots of practice.
As a graduate student, I worked as a tutor in the campus Writing Center. Later, just before graduating, I taught Writing, ESL and GED at the Denver County Jail. Since completing my degree, I became a Writing and Critical Thinking Professor for two separate Universities (Metro State College and Devry University), whe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been involved with the First Tee Program for over 10 years now. This program teaches children life lessons; such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship through playing golf. This program is nationwide and has developed many young children into community leaders, respected business men/women and college athletes. I have been a tutor with this program since 1998. I believe it is very important for young children to focus on school and education, but also get involved in activities where they can meet people and begin forming life long relationships at an early age.
I absolutely love working with kids. I believe it is very important for a tutor not to simply tell a student how to do things, but to show them and then through questions and developing a consistent road map make them come up with the answer themselves. There is a huge difference between pretending to know ho ... read more

Tutoring the children over the last two years has been the most rewarding work for me. When a middle school child actually gets up, goes and gets a dictionary, and looks up the meaning, pronunciation, and spelling of a word, without having direction from me, it makes my heart sing. Never have I had that feeling before, therefore it is my goal to continue to provide any child with the best tools, a positive mindset, and forward ambition to achieve the best opportunities in life that only an education can give them. I believe it is imperative that people of all ages, ethnicity, and socio-economic status have access to the best avenue to attain wealth, prosperity, and an increased quality of life: an education. It is my hope that when my students leave my class that they feel hopeful, excited, and energetic about their futures.

A Little Bit About Me...

I volunteer for HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar) every year. This program pushes facilitation, which is what I strive to do. I like to try to facilitate and push my students to ask questions and talk to me as a peer. I always try to give at least three compliments to every criticism because students are often too hard on themselves. For some reason, most of the students I have worked with have had an English teacher along the line who has made them feel "stupid." It is amazing what boosting confidence can do! I like to understand where students are coming from and what their specific needs are so I can address them in a way that best fits their learning style and experiences.
I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. I realized ... read more
