The Achievement Centers, our after school tutorial/diagnostic clinic and before and after school care, is available for all ages and subjects. Tutoring and diagnostic testing is available after school, evenings (Monday – Friday) and Saturday mornings. The clinic is available year-round. Our testing clinician and school psychologist offer a Psychoeducational Evaluation to all new students. The testing is scheduled for two three hour sessions on separate days during after school hours. The evaluation consist of various test measuring a student’s cognitive abilities, processing skills, IQ, and academic levels. The evaluation will determine a student’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as how they think, reason and process information. A conference will be held with the family and/or the student. I am not young enough to know everything

I agree with the concept that each person learns a bit differently, and even more so that as a tutor, I should try and find the most effective style for my tutee. My academic career also taught me the importance of setting time limits for each action item; and switching tasks to keep the mind sharp.

Physics is a challenging subject and it requires understanding of concpets, application of mathematics and anlytical reasoning. My style is to help students learn how to catch fish rather feeding them fish. I give emphasis on helping students develop their own reasoning, so that they can become independent learners.I usually explain concpets first and teach them how to apply these concpets for problem solving. Once they are good at understanding concpets, problem solving becomes easy. I have been teaching for 25 years. I began as a high-school teacher, taught grade school and special education, and then spent 20 years as a university professor of English and philosophy. I started tutoring as a graduate student and have been doing it on and off now for 20 years.
I like working with grade-school students, but I like best a variety of teaching situations. That for me truly represents the challange of teaching. Only a diversity of students can bring learning to itself, reveal the demands of cognition for what they are. As a philosophy PhD this interests me very much.
