A Little Bit About Me...

Through my years of teaching I have worked with a variety of learners with different needs. I have worked with children with Autism, ADHD, gifted children, and children with strong emotional needs. I have had to approach each individual differently and focus more on the way they learn, and less on the way I teach. I try and approach teaching from a position of equality, in which I can show what I know, and not what my students don't. As an artist, I am an extremely visual learner, and try and use visual aids whenever possible, which I have found work well for most everyone. I have a passion for teaching and my goal throughout my career has been to make learning fun and interesting, while supporting the emotional needs of my students.
I have been teaching since 2005, and doing one-on-one tutoring for just as long. I graduated with a BA in Anthropology, and an MA in Philosophy and R ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Upon my graduation from high school, my calculus teacher, who had noticed my natural aptitude for mathematics and my ability to help other students to understand it, referred some younger students who had been struggling to me for tutoring. Due to my success with this first student, or rather, the student’s new found success in his math courses, my former teacher referred another student to me the following summer. In subsequent years, while I was pursuing my education, many friends and fellow students, asked me to tutor them in various topics ranging from college algebra, to statistics, to calculus. I have completed the most advanced mathematics and physics courses offered to undergraduates at the University of Michigan.

My goal in tutoring is not only to help the students grasp the information, but to cultivate a love of learning and confidence in how they learn best. I want to equip my students to be successful in future subjects because they understand how to learn and how to organize themselves in a way that works best for them. I also believe in learning through experience, be that acting out a concept, making a model to explain something, or searching everyday life for examples that will be relevant to my students. I want my time with students to be enjoyable and productive.

More About This Tutor...

As a graduate with a B.S. in physics and a B.S. in Chemistry, earning a 3.98 GPA and Summa Cum-Laude recognition while completing the Honors Liberal Studies program in obtaining both degrees at Northern Arizona University, I believe I have thoroughly learned the subjects of physics and chemistry, as well as math (as higher level math is required for physics). In addition to my education, I have tutored for one and a half years at the Learning Assistance Center at Northern Arizona University. At the Learning Assistance Center I also earned Level II certification through extensive training and experience. I have also scored a 31 on the MCAT, and have been accepted to University of New Mexico's School of Medicine.
The most common approach I take to tutoring a student is to first find out the student's learning style (be it visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or a combination), and then ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I find teaching to be an extremely rewarding activity. I immensely enjoy the process of finding the best ways to reach a particular child, especially one who is struggling with a given subject or concept. Finding ways to remove the fear of math or apathy towards learning in general and developing in the child an appreciation for of a historical perspective the are just some of the goals a good educator needs to have in mind. In my particular areas of interest, science and math, I think it's imperative for the educator to work at developing in the student a respect, understanding, and even love for the scientific process. This is essential in creating a life long desire and excitement in finding ways to understand the world and the universe from the empirical perspective.
