I graduated from Purdue University in May of 2007 with a BS degree in Applied Physics. The Applied portion means I took an additional 10 courses on top of the normal physics load. I am a strong believer in student-directed learning. While I am happy to explain concepts and answer specific questions, many students merely ask “Can you show me how to do this?” While a demonstration is useful and necessary the first few times, I will then switch to leading questions to allow the student to recall the appropriate next steps. It is also useful to have the student explain what they DO understand about a problem to better identify what they DON’T understand and why. To add an element of variety, games like timed challenges or linking current events to math problems are relevant “distractions”.

I have been teaching for twenty-nine years in subjects of English, Literature, Art History, Drawing, World Civilization, and the Humanities. I worked at LearningRX as a cognitive skills trainer where I worked with students who were having difficulty in school and I was able to find their areas of difficulty and help build those areas up while also helping with their memory, visual acuity, and processing speed.
I like to have a relationship with the students I tutored where they feel comfortable with me; I want them to be able to tell me the problems they're having with the work and what I can do to help. I like to be friendly with them while still being an authority figure where they want to do their best. I think this type of relationship allows me to push the students to their maximum limit without discouraging them when we're having a difficult session.
