A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching and working with all children of all ages and believe all children can learn, but I've learned that students learn in different ways. As part of that, I love encouraging students to believe in themselves and not settle for the status quo. I am patient, easy going, and considerate, and I want to provide the best education possible. But I also enjoy motivating students to take control of their education. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings, encouragement, tools and learning experiences.
As a Big Ten graduate from Penn State University, I was very much driven to push myself in a wide variety of subjects to achieve a well-rounded education. But I also earned my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from National University in La Jolla, Calif. My undergrad degree in Film and Video/Communications. I've a ... read more

After I earned my BFA, I started working towards my Master of Art in Art History. I have an understanding of most studio art forms and extensive knowledge of Art History. When I started working on my thesis, I joined the Minnesota Reading Corps, and have been teaching early literacy ever since. For the last three years, I have been working in Head Start classes, preparing children for kindergarten. I am currently enrolled in the FasTrack program at Bemidji State University working on getting my teaching license in Visual Arts K-12.
I have been researching the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets because I plan on using them as a base for the children that I work with at Community Action Duluth through the Circles of Support program. I believe that teaching children academic skills while building assets within them is necessary for a healthy community. I teach around the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

From childhood, "playing" school was a passion! Afforded an excellent education by teachers, mentors, spiritual guides and community leaders - I'm thrilled to meet today's promising learners with the same measure of affirmation. Every child is talented and gifted. The teacher's role is to design a context for success within which problems are resolved, obstacles dismantled, weaknesses strengthened and doors opened for continued enrichment.
In my Senior Honors study, I worked with a group of special needs children. I matched nontraditional learning methods to identify and develop talents and interests. I have taught music privately, for music stores, and taught and assisted with music in public and parochial schools. My teaching Internship was at Robbinsdale High School in art and commercial design. I served as Teaching Assistant to the Dean of Students while earning m ... read more

My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I have even used graphics to create a learning environment for students who lack imagination! The goose-bumps I get when I see the 'lightbulb' of recognition turn on in a student's eyes remains my reason for wanting to share the pursuit of knowledge with everyone! I understand and use the proven academic methods for teaching, but am still open for the venue that works.
After getting my degree in Printing/Desktop Publishing/Graphic Design, I ran my own successful business for 11 years. Tutoring was my link to the creative challenge of showing people a way ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I believe that any kid can learn if they are taught in a way that is fun and structured. I tutored these kids in Math, Science, Social Studies and English. I also spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant in an upper level Philosophy course during my undergrad. Most of my TA tutoring was helping college students write papers.
I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find o ... read more
