My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : Published primarily in Poetry

My primary goal is to help students understand the "why" of studies. "Why" do we look for differentials in calculus? "Why" do we describe imagery in poetry instead of just saying how we feel? "Why" do we enter compound keys in some SQL tables but not others? "Why" do we need a conclusion on our essay? If we understand why we do something, we are far more likely to remember how to do it. I also strive to keep the homework the work of the student. They do the work, I guide them to the correct (or at least best) answer. Students are more likely to remember how to complete the problem if they are in the driver seat, not the tutor.

I first like to understand the student's learning style, as we all have different methods of learning. Some are visual, others do better with reading a text, or using examples. I use a variety of methods to teach my students, depending on age. I also want to learn where and why the student is struggling with the subject. I make my tutoring sessions interesting so that I capture the student's attention and thoroughly engage him/her. I currently teach in an interim classroom for secondary students who have been suspended or expelled. I teach all subjects, but am most comfortable with LA and math. Before this, I taught in a high school classroom for students with behavioral disabilities. I taught LA and social skills. I also have been a para-educator in a junior high school, a substitute teacher, and taught dance lessons.

I am a recent graduate from the University of Dubuque where I received my Bachelor of Science in k-12 Physical Education and Instructional Strategist 5-12 (Special Education).
