Gilbert M - Cambridge, NY 02138 (19.2 mi) - GED Tutor - $48.50/hr.
Throughout high school and college, I have tutored peers and younger students in both math and physics several times, occasionally for pay. Last year I was a course assistant for a college freshman-year math course in theoretical math at Harvard University. I am enrolling in a PhD program in pure math at the University of Texas, Austin, where I will have a 16-hour-per week teaching load including three sections of undergraduate calculus. When I was a course assistant, my section scored higher on the quizzes and exams than the other sections. I certainly put in a lot of effort and enjoyed teaching and helping students gain the deep understanding of the material to do well in a difficult college math course. My written and spoken communication skills are honed due to a liberal arts education at Harvard including humanities and science education, besides a concentration in theoretical

Amalia H - West Glover, VT 05875 (19.3 mi) - GED Tutor - $49.50/hr.
I am a strong believer in leading by example. When given a task, I fulfill it to the best of my abilities, taking responsibility for it's completion and encourage those around me to do the same. As opposed to criticizing, I focus on the positive aspects of people's abilities and build confidence with that foundation. With that said, I do maintain high but reasonable expectations while providing the support necessary for success. I served in the Straight Up AmeriCorps as a member for two years, specializing in tutoring and mentoring in a high school setting. I was responsible for teaching and leading programs for students as well as organizing events. Once completed, I was hired by a local non-profit to administer services and manage a Family Literacy program for 20 families. My duties included direct mentoring and tutoring, as well as identifying and implementing learning programs based

James E - Barton, VT 05822 (23.7 mi) - GED Tutor - $37.00/hr.
I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort. I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State.

Tabitha H - Glover, VT 05839 (24 mi) - GED Tutor - $33.00/hr.
I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I currently write book reviews for The San Francisco Book Review and the San Diego Book Review. You'll find samples of my work at http://www.thereadingcan.blogspot.com . I really feel I can help youth and young adults learn to read. Currently I work with individuals who have disabilities to find and maintain work. I would like to help youth and young adults with disabilities learn to read as well. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.

Mary B - West Burke, VT 05871 (35.9 mi) - GED Tutor - $41.50/hr.
As a Business Consultant over the past 20 years I have taught computer and business applications to over 50 business employees. I have extensive experience in fund accounting and grant administration.
While in college I tutored finite and basic math in a work study program. I have found that I have a unique ability to teach students who have learning disabilities. I have the ability to read how a student learns and change to their abilities. I began my college education majoring in Special Education and changed to Business later when I realized I was suited for one on one teaching. I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in questio

Gregory P - Montpelier, VT 05602 (38.5 mi) - GED Tutor - $62.00/hr.
My passion is making mathematics accessible. After high school I was underwhelmed by mathematics. However as I took more math in college, I realized how much I had missed in high school. As I learned more mathematics, I became determined to make it my business to find and implement better methods of educating people on mathematics in a way that does not overwhelm them, but simultaneously makes their learning experience more useful. I studied teacher education as an undergraduate, and attended graduate school at Dartmouth where the program in mathematics has a specific focus on preparing one to teach mathematics. I look forward to continuing making progress on my goal of making mathematics more useful, and more accessible to more students. I am particularly enthusiastic about teaching
mathematics to all students, and my record documents this fact. As an undergraduate I studied education,

Katherine B - Norton, VT 05907 (40.5 mi) - GED Tutor - $41.00/hr.
I am a Teach for America teacher. This means that in 2009, I applied with 40,000 applicants and was among the 4000 selected to become a teacher in a Title One school. As a TFA teacher, I have undergone intensive training that focuses on backwards planning and results based accountability. In the past year I have taught fourth and fifth grade subjects including: writing, science, social studies, fine arts, and technology. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked with teens in crisis. In that role I worked with teens to develop healthy coping skills in times of great stress. I've also tutored in biology, psychology, and English while I was in college. I am passionate about igniting a child's natural inquisitiveness to facilitate learning. It is my firm belief that education must be more than memorization. A student must be able to incorporate the information that they are learning into their
