A Little Bit About Me...

In the process of earning my BA in History (minor in Archaeology), I became familiar with a broad range of historical subjects. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. My MA required a publication-ready thesis, which would not have been possible without organization and self-motivation.
It is widely acknowledged that students learn in a variety of ways. In a tutoring environment, I believe in discovering each student’s optimal learning strategy, as well as identifying techniques for making other styles of teaching accessible. I aim to enable further education, as well as transmit more urgently needed information.

I am a driven life-long learner who achieves high levels of success in life. I focus on excellence in all I do. I have a well-rounded education. My experience has led me to expertise in teaching math, psychology, English and history. I have worked with students from Kindergarten to adult age. At the high school level, preparation for transition to college, training or work has been an additional area that I have provided expertise.
Having worked with young children through college students and adults, I can teach a variety of ages and make the material applicable to the student's skill-level. I am a patient teacher with expectations for effort. All students can learn but may learn differently. I am able to adapt material to the student's learning style. I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort.

I helped students learn to express themselves in writing, combining an emphasis on proper grammar with the recognition of each writer’s individual voice.
