A Little Bit About Me...

Having always pursued excellence in eduation, I graduated from the Univ of Colorado with a 3.5/4 in Mech. Engineering. I then worked for Motorola in Phoenix, where I received security clearances for work for the military. Although I enjoyed my work, I realized my true passion was teaching, and earned my certification at the University of Phoenix. My student teaching at a local middle school in Phoenix was successful, earning special recognition. At Heritage High School where I taught, I was trained in a progressive teaching method for algebra. I have left the workplace to care and educate my children and I have used different techniques to meet their education needs. Throughout college I had extensive experience working with classmates while we solved math equations and physics problems together. I did volunteer work teaching English to children in Mexico as well as teaching English to college age students in Mexico.
I like to first get an idea of what the student knows about the problem.. I find that the more time I spend listening to what they know it naturally turns into what pieces I need to add-in. Unless they came to the session to learn new material that would be a different scenario entirely in which it would depend on the student how I taught. I would have to find out what type of a learner they are. Whether it be a visual learner, if they need examples or are an entirely conceptual type of learner.

I enjoy teaching children math because so many seem to struggle in this area, especially in confidence. I believe when given the chance of success in math, all children can gain the confidence needed to successfully accomplish the needed requirements by themselves in the future. I believe math is learned when it is made into real-life experiences and also when it is performed numerous times.
I have a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering but because of my love of math, I took several advanced math courses in college and almost graduated with a minor in math. Last year, I tutored students at Sandcreek Middle school on weekly basis and one student privately at Hillview Elementary (1st grader). I have three children of my own who I assist in math and have taught them in the past.

I have a love for children and for learning. I believe in being patient and encouraging children to learn. I have learned in my dealings with children that they respond better when they feel that I have a genuine interest in them. I have worked with children with Autism. They are a special challenge, but have helped me to develop more patience and understanding.
