More About This Tutor...

I believe that each student responds to direct personal interest in him or her as a person first, and then as a learner. A child yearns to be noticed and appreciated for his unique talents and interests, so I start there. I am a low-key but enthusiastic and energetic person who relates to the struggles of the learner. My goal is to help the child or young adult to find that aha experience that makes learning fun for them. Whether the problem is grasping the idea in a reading passage, struggling to make a paragraph sound better, or learning how to summarize ideas, I gently work with people until they accomplish their goals.
As a voracious reader, I have always been interested in many subjects in the world, above and beyond what I have studied in school. I earned a bachelor's degree in English and a recent master's in international management with a focus on migrant education/bil ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I first determine the student's level in each subject, and tutor accordingly. Since every person learns in a different way, I may try more than one approach until it is clear that the student is gaining an understanding of the subject matter. I am patient, positive, and encouraging. I find it very rewarding to help others. When I see the student learning and advancing, I share in their joy at overcoming a stumbling block, or accomplishing their goal.
I am currently working as the Math Specialist at a K-8th school where I provide assistance to students who need extra help or are performing below grade level. I also work with students in 8th grade teaching Algebra to those who have the ability to learn at a faster pace than the class as a whole.

Teaching can be a most wonderful adventure. I believe every child can learn. At times students or overwhelming with new concepts, and they need to be encouraged, and praise until they can accomplish the task at hand. I enjoy seeing the appearence of awareness on a childs face, when they have accomplished a goal, or solved a problem they had difficulty solving. I believe tutoring a child can be a powerful tool, and it can also unleash a potential genius.
As a graduate, I've been very blessed to have received a degree in Business Communication. In college I learned how to become a better educator, and communicate with them on the highest level. I have always had a natural curiosity for learning Mathematics and a desire to teach others. I remember being a student in Elementary School struggling to understand a particular concept and then imagining myself explaining this concept to others once I achieved understanding. Mathematics has always been challenging for me but noticed that as long as I was persistent I always acquired knowledge of the material. I was exposed to many different math instructors and many of them motivated me to learn mathematics and inspired me to want to teach. I am very patient when I explain concepts to others and enjoy coming up with different ways of explaining these concepts.
I tutored at the Hartnell College Math Lab in topics ranging from Pre-Algebra to Calculus. I also tutored/mentored recent high school graduates and motivated them to pursue careers in math and science. I tutored Algebra at ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love helping a student come to a mathematical conclusion on his/her own. My 7th graders discovered the distributive prop through an investigation about theater seats. I also remember showing my Alg2 students why borrowing works using $1, $10, and $100 bills and trading with the bank. They were so excited to finally understand subtraction. What a thrill for me! However, when a frustrated Junior was having trouble calculating determinants correctly, it simply didn’t make sense to start at the beginning and help her discover how determinants work. When tutoring, I try to invest time in helping students fully understand concepts when it makes sense to. But I do keep in mind that traditional methods are sometimes the better choice.
Throughout high school and college, I belonged to several tutoring organizations. I took multiple extra classes on education and tutoring techn ... read more

In 2009, I completed a profession editing certificate to add to my degrees in English and rhetoric. Because of this experience, I am confident teaching and tutoring the humanities (English, history, philosophy, etc.) at high-school and college levels. For two years, I have taught all subjects as an aid in a fourth and fifth grade special day (SDC) class. This experience has taught me effective ways to teach difficult material to young learners with particular learning needs.
I am comfortable lecturing on various subjects. However, I have seen the best results with repetition and continual reinforcement of the subject matter while weaving in larger ideas here and there. I am calm, patient, persistent, and supportive of everyone's particular abilities.

Shortly thereafter, I taught online for a cyber charter school and tutored at Huntington Learning Center. I have recently taught math at the junior high school level (for 5 years), while coaching softball and basketball. Between all of my teaching experience, I have taught grades K-12 and many different subjects. I enjoy all levels of students and most subject matter.
