I am able to assess a student's level of proficiency and tailor the content of training and my teaching and communication style to the level of the student. I believe in teaching through discovery, real-life examples and hands-on work. When one approach seems to not be working, I adjust. I believe anyone can learn and their quality of knowledge improved by finding a level and rapport that works for each individually. I work patiently, with humor, and at a pace with students that helps them to feel not only comfortable but appreciated for their efforts. I consider a key ingredient to be to first find what base levels of knowledge the student has before plunging into the subject at hand. Once this base has been assessed, then it is much easier to explain the principles and methods required to solve most any problems. I try to combine the characteristics of those I have worked with and educators in my past, that I found to be the easiest to learn from, and as well to not feel patronized or talked down to.
I retired from IBM February 2010 after 31 years and my new goal is to be an educator. I did custom circuit logic design for numerous products and conducted educ ... read more

Teaching is a difficult task. Everyone learns at a different pace and on their own level. Some students are quick learners and their teacher only needs to go over the lesson once; other students need to hear the subject content in a different form to understand it. Having said that, I can't explain my teaching style as a cut and dry formula. The skill level of each student and the way they process information will determine how I will present them with questions and explanations. I don't believe in teaching every student with the same teaching style; I believe in conforming to the skill level of the student so that at the end of the day, they learn the topic we set out to conquer.
As a Mathematics major, I have the drive to solve problems. I have been tutoring for seven years and when I'm not doing it, I miss it. I enjoy helping students 'solve their problems' by teaching them how ... read more
