My comments on tutoring Testing Strategies : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Tutor for Regular Elementary and Special Education

I have recently retired after 30+ years as an elementary special and regular education teacher. For the past 15 years I have also worked as a tutor for the city of White Plains. I have done extensive private tutoring for the past 20 years. For 17 years I worked as an elementary special education classroom teacher at New York Hospital in an out-patient day treatment program. This program involved elementary school age children who displayed severe emotional and academic difficulties and were unable to function in a regular school setting.

My comments on tutoring Testing Strategies : Personalized strategies to pass nursing exams and NCLEX

Previous nursing tutor at Dutchess Community College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Have compiled multiple Power Points over the years which explain concepts in simple terms and which have illustrations of concepts which will not be found in nursing textbooks. Unfortunately, nursing textbooks tend to be a faceless landscape which is presented to the student with many complex concepts. It is important that the student be able to visualize the concepts as nursing is all about understanding and not memorization. At exam time, students are normally assigned approximately 19 chapters of reading. The brain needs concrete objects to latch onto, such as pictures. My comments on tutoring Testing Strategies : I have taught many students on how to take a test. We go over many test strategies and ways to help narrow down choices even when you don't know the answer. With all the state tests, children need to be taught these strategies. I teach them to all my students.

The first strategy that I use is building a relationship with the student by getting to know who they are, what there favorite things are, subjects, goals etc... This helps me discover what strategies I can use to help them learn. I also try to discover which learning method works best. Are they visual or auditory learner? Do they learn by having things taught step by step, or do they learn through visual or read aloud examples? I believe that every student has the ability to learn and to succeed; it is about finding the best strategy and providing that extra support. Being that advocate for students is the reason I went into school counseling.

My teaching style is interactive, many of my former students would characterize it as "coaching". I always empower the student to find their way and to have them become "pros" in the learning process. I do not do the work for them, but I show them how they can make their tasks and finishing them more efficient. I am a firm believer in the philosophy that edication is not preparation for life, it is life itself. Experience is key.
Over 13 years of working with students that were not scholars initially. After learning skills to improve their educational/learning experience, they became more scholarly, and enjoyed learning. This is key. They just need to change their perspective, and learn how to make "learning" enjoyable, like it was in kindergarden.
