A Little Bit About Me...

I benefited from the liberal arts education I received from the University of Puget Sound, which offered a diverse selection of classes and an exploratory environment in which to pursue my studies. For two years, I studied Chemistry and Biology while also taking classes in the Humanities. I eventually majored in International Political Economy and obtained minors in Spanish and Latin American Studies. During my undergraduate years, I studied in Oaxaca, Mexico and received a grant for summer research. Upon graduation I spent a year doing anthropology research in Peru on a Fulbright grant, while also becoming fluent in Spanish and learning a third language, Quechua.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy learning and try to pass along some of my enthusiasm to my students. I will work with the student to find the best methods for us to approach the material so he or she will have the greatest success. I believe that creating a structure assists in the learning process, but the structure may be different for different people. This is not to say that I impose a rigid schedule or formula to the tutoring sessions, but I do work to create of flow for the the study session which will consistently show the student his or her progress each time.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching strategies which have worked for me in the classroom include cooperative learning groups that encourage social interaction, as well as, jigsaw groups. The use of PowerPoint presentations to illustrate the material utilizes a technology component which I find useful. Strategies for special needs students would include making sure to see if they are a visual, auditory, or sensory learner and teach to those senses. I would need to tailor my lesson plans by making the information more interactive for students who have special needs or are English language learners to make sure that they are learning the information. I would have more cooperative group activities and hands-on tasks that the students could engage in, such as a webquest activity in the computer lab. Graphic organizers are always good tools to use.

I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. Most of all, I am an interested learner, in a variety of subjects, and I am excited to share my interest with others. I have a good sense of when I am being understood, and when I am not.
