A Little Bit About Me...

My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I also tend to use a lot of analogies, that students can related to. I access web information to help explain chemical concepts in creative ways. I also try to get students to think of problems as puzzles. I believe learning can be a fun experience as long as we never forget to ask the fundamental questions - "Why and How?"
While working on my PhD. I was a graduate teaching fellow for the Dept. of Ed. Teacher-Scholar program. I supervised undergraduates in organic chemistry labs, graded exams, led recitation sections and graded homework for both organic and general chemistry le ... read more

I facilitated several ethics courses at Gonzaga University and helped tutor fellow graduate students in research methods and statistical analysis at Oregon State University. Getting my Ph.D. in English has given me the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. During the last seven years I have been tutoring students at all grade levels, from elementary school through high school, as well as teaching classes in English at several universities. I have tutored children in test-taking skills (including math, vocabulary, and critical reading skills) for the SAT and for private school entrance exams. I have also helped students with their writing at all grade levels, on such common problems as grammar, clarity, and learning how to elaborate on one's ideas.
I have always seen teaching as a matter of reigniting a natural curiosity which all students have, and directing it toward an academic subject. A Little Bit About Me...

I have an MS in physics and a BS in mathematics. I have twenty years tutoring students in math and physics, starting while working on my BS. I taught trigonometry as a teaching assistant at portland State University while a graduate student. I also taught at Chemeketa Community College as a supplemental instructor, holding group tutoring sessions for basic algebra, trigonometry, and geometry, for classes that used these subjects as part of the course.
I enjoy teaching and creating interest in the subject that is being taught. I have learned from experiance that the more interested the students become in the subject, the better they learn. I have found that many students have a psychological barrier when it comes to mathematics and the sciences. Once that barrier is brought down, the students interest in the subject starts to perk, and it's all uphill from there. I strive to break t ... read more

Helping students be successful is the most important aspect of teaching, in my opinion. Each student is unique in his or her learning style. A teacher's job is to find the way in which a student learns best and to encourage them to think on their own. Students must think about and discover for themselves in order for learning to be truly meaningful. I am someone who will help guide a student in this direction.
I graduated with a BA from Willamette University with a major in history and minors in math and Spanish. I then attended Willamette's MAT program where I earned a Masters in Education with endorsements to teach middle and high school mathematics, social studies and ESOL.
